Broadsides – Dead Feminists
For the 2022 Season, Chautauqua Opera Company and Conservatory is proud to bring Broadsides- Dead Feminists to the Chautauqua grounds.
THE DEAD FEMINISTS
A collaboration between Chandler O’Leary and Jessica Spring, the Dead Feminists series began in 2008 before the presidential election. The series features quotes by historical feminists, tied in with current political and social issues. Each limited-edition broadside is letterpress printed from hand-drawn lettering and illustrations, with 32 broadsides produced to date. A portion of the proceeds is donated to a cause that aligns with social justice issues. Their book, Dead Feminists: Historic Heroines in Living Color, was published by Sasquatch Books in 2016 and won a Pacific Northwest Book Award.
Jessica is the proprietor of Springtide Press, where she designs, prints, and binds unique artist books, broadsides, and ephemera, incorporating handmade paper and letterpress printing. Small finely-crafted editions consider historical topics and popular culture from a unique perspective. Jessica has an MFA from Columbia College Chicago and teaches workshops around the country.
Chandler is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design and the proprietor of a small business called Anagram Press, specializing in hand lettering and illustration. She is the author and artist of the illustrated travel blog Drawn the Road Again, and her second book, The Best Coast was published by Sasquatch Books in 2019. Her next book, On Island Time, will be published in the spring of 2023.
