SUMMARY:Norah O'Donnell and Deborah Roberts
DESCRIPTION:Two of America’s most respected television journalists help launch Chautauqua’s 2026 Summer Assembly and a week on “Icons and Instigators: Women Who Change the World” with a conversation based on their careers\, and in particular new books by each that lift up and celebrate the strength\, stories and bonds of women today as well as throughout American history. \nNorah O’Donnell is an Emmy Award-winning “60 Minutes” contributing correspondent\, with nearly 30 years of experience covering the most pivotal moments of our time. She has interviewed world leaders\, reported from conflict zones and shaped national conversations on politics\, global affairs and gender equity. As one of the most respected voices in journalism\, with an exceptional ability to connect with leaders across industries\, O’Donnell has earned a reputation for insightful\, thought-provoking conversations that clarify complex issues. She has covered eight presidential elections\, interviewed every living U.S. president\, and\, in 2024\, conducted a historic interview with Pope Francis — his first-ever with an American journalist. \nIn February 2026\, O’Donnell released We the Women: The Hidden Heroes Who Shaped America\, a groundbreaking book that uncovers the hidden heroines of American history — women who shaped the nation’s path but were long overlooked. \nA trailblazer in her own right\, O’Donnell is one of only three women to ever solo anchor an evening network news broadcast\, “CBS Evening News\,” from 2019 to 2025. Previously\, she co-hosted “CBS This Morning” and served as CBS News’ chief White House correspondent\, covering the Obama administration. She began her career at NBC News\, reporting from the Pentagon on 9/11 and later covering Congress and the White House. A champion for women in media\, O’Donnell serves on the board of the International Women’s Media Foundation. Raised in a military family\, she grew up across the U.S.\, Germany and South Korea. \nO’Donnell’s investigative journalism has led to significant policy changes\, particularly in her reporting on sexual assault in the U.S. military\, which earned her a duPont-Columbia Award and Scripps Howard Award. She has also received multiple Edward R. Murrow Awards\, a Sigma Delta Chi Award\, and several Gracie Awards for her work in broadcast journalism. \nDeborah Roberts is co-anchor of the venerable ABC news magazine “20/20” and an award-winning network correspondent. A media veteran who is celebrating her 30th anniversary at ABC News\, Roberts regularly reports across ABC News programs and digital platforms. She hosts a weekly podcast\, “20/20 The After Show\,” and serves as a frequent correspondent and substitute anchor for “Good Morning America” and an occasional guest co-host on “The View.” \nRoberts is the author of the New York Times bestsellers Sisters Loved and Treasured: Stories of Unbreakable Bonds and Lessons Learned and Cherished: The Teacher Who Changed My Life. She also co-authored a book with her husband\, NBC anchor Al Roker\, titled Been There\, Done That: Family Wisdom for Modern Times. \nAt ABC News\, Roberts plays a significant role in the network’s coverage of breaking news events. She reported from Vatican City for the death of Pope Francis and the historic election of the first-ever American Pope Leo XIV. She also reported from London\, England for Queen Elizabeth II’s Jubilee and death in 2022\, the funeral of President Jimmy Carter and the inauguration of President Donald Trump and Joe Biden reporting live from Washington\, DC. \nRoberts wide-ranging newsmaker interviews include former First Lady Michelle Obama; Grammy Award-winning superstars Elton John and Celine Dion; supermodel Brooke Shields\, as well as Hollywood superstars Timotheé Chalamet\, Elle Fanning\, Amy Adams\, Colin Farrell\, Vanessa Williams\, Margot Robbie\, Ryan Gosling\, and the casts of Hulu’s popular streaming programs “Only Murders in the Buildings” and “The Bear.” \nHer reporting on “20/20” has taken her across the country investigating true crime stories where she regularly interviews the families of victims\, law enforcement officials and the individuals at the center of national headlines like Gypsy Rose Blanchard. \nPrior to joining “ABC News\,” Roberts was a correspondent at “NBC News” where she reported for various NBC broadcasts. \nHer in-depth coverage of current events has earned her a Peabody Award for the “20/20” special “Say Her Name: Breonna Taylor.” Additionally\, Roberts has been awarded multiple Emmy Awards for international and national coverage of world events\, including the AIDS crisis in Africa and maternal mortality in Bangladesh.
