She has attended many seminars\, workshops\, and retreats offered by Contemplative Outreach\, founded by the late Father Thomas Keating\, a Trappist Monk who was instrumental in the creation of Centering Prayer. Carol practices Centering Prayer with weekly groups in Campus Ministry at Villanova University and at St. David’s Episcopal Church outside of Philadelphia. She has led and participated in many Centering Prayer workshops and groups in the areas surrounding her hometown of Philadelphia. She is a member of the Augustinian Affiliates\, the lay order of the Augustinian Friars and volunteers for the Friars in the Villanova Province. Carol is a past board member and treasurer of the Chautauqua Catholic Community. In January 2022\, in partnership with Muhammad Mohiuddin M.D.\, he became the first surgeon in the world to implant a genetically modified pig heart into a living patient. For the Chautauqua Women’s Club\, he’ll discuss “Why a Pig Heart?” in his installment of the Contemporary Issues Forum. \nPrior to his arrival at UMSOM\, Griffith served as vice chair in the department of surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine\, where he was also chief of cardiothoracic surgery and the Henry T. Bahnson Professor of Surgery. He also served as the founding director for the McGowan Center for Artificial Organ Development. Griffith has directed more than 1\,200 heart transplants and 600 lung transplants and is an innovator in the use of immunosuppression after transplant and mechanical blood pumps prior to transplant. \nGriffith received his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. He completed a surgery internship and general and cardiothoracic surgery residency at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine Health Center Hospitals.
