SUMMARY:The Rev. Canon Stephanie Spellers
DESCRIPTION:The Rev. Canon Dr. Stephanie Spellers is one of the Episcopal Church’s leading thinkers around 21st-century ministry and mission. The author of The Church Cracked Open: Disruption\, Decline and New Hope for Beloved Community and Radical Welcome: Embracing God\, The Other and the Spirit of Transformation\, she recently wrapped up nearly a decade as canon to the Episcopal Church’s Presiding Bishop Michael Curry. She currently assists at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church in New York and is at work on a new book exploring what nonreligious Americans (the “Nones” and “Dones”) can teach us about the future of faith. \nPrior to her service with Bishop Curry\, she directed mission and evangelism work at General Theological Seminary and as a canon in the Diocese of Long Island; founded The Crossing\, a ground-breaking emerging church within St. Paul’s Cathedral in Boston; and led numerous church-wide renewal efforts. \nA native of Frankfort\, Kentucky\, and a graduate of both Episcopal Divinity School and Harvard Divinity School\, she received an honorary doctorate from the General Theological Seminary in New York City in 2018. \nSpellers makes her home today in New York’s Harlem neighborhood with her husband Albert and their two chaotic cats.

SUMMARY:"Unbecoming: New Works by Yael Braha Created in Shigaraki\, Japan" Exhibition - July 20–August 19
DESCRIPTION:“Unbecoming: New Works by Yael Braha Created in Shigaraki\, Japan” exhibition runs July 20–August 19. Yael Braha designs objects with bold and stylized surface patterns\, which feature optical and geometrical illusions by integrating innovative digital fabrication with traditional ceramic processes. The creative intention is to challenge and expand viewer’s perceptual assumptions when experiencing a minimalist yet complex functional design object. The way that patterns are framed within a form\, where they are cut\, assembled\, and overlapped\, alludes to the process of film editing\, assembling separate but related parts to create a sequence that is larger than the sum of their parts. All work shown has been created during her residency in Shigaraki Japan. This exhibition is generously sponsored by Friends of CVA. Curated by Judy Barie.

SUMMARY:Chautauqua Theater Company presents Execution of Justice
DESCRIPTION:Written and Directed by Emily Mann \nIt’s 1978\, and San Francisco is a divided city. The brutal murders of Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk—the nation’s first openly gay elected official—shocked a nation. This gripping documentary play examines the trial of Dan White\, the disgruntled former city supervisor whose reduced voluntary manslaughter conviction\, rather than murder in the first degree\, sparked outrage and introduced the infamous “Twinkie defense.” Ripped from the headlines\, personal interviews\, and court documents of the past but still resonating powerfully today\, this play confronts themes of justice\, prejudice\, and privilege and grapples with the issues of gun violence and systemic homophobia. This contemporary classic challenges us to reflect on our identity as a nation. \nRecommended for audiences ages 13 and older.

SUMMARY:MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: THE FINAL RECKONING
DESCRIPTION:Our lives are the sum of our choices. Tom Cruise is Ethan Hunt in this sentimental sendoff that accomplishes its mission with a characteristic flair for the impossible. “It’s thrilling\, funny\, absurd in the best way. It’s pure spectacle\, and that’s the entire reason these movies exist.” -Karl Quinn\, Sydney Morning Herald “The last hour is exhilarating; there are scenes that will make you lean forward in your seat\, amazed at what you’re seeing.” -Mick LaSalle\, San Francisco Chronicle “A thrilling jolt of pure summer fun.” -Rafer Guzman\, Newsday (PG-13\, 169m)
