SUMMARY:Marcella Kanfer Rolnick & Mark Smucker
DESCRIPTION:Continuing Chautauqua’s weeklong exploration of “Innovation in Capitalism: How to Meet 21st-Century Challenges?\,” leaders of two storied American companies come into conversation to explore the phenomenon of multi-generational family leadership and the impact of family businesses on the economy and capitalism. Marcella Kanfer Rolnick and Mark Smucker are top executives at GOJO Industries\, Inc.\, and The J.M. Smucker Company\, respectively. In this conversation\, GOJO and Smucker will serve as two case study companies that have survived and thrived for decades — GOJO since 1946 and Smucker since 1897. Informed by the experiences of these two successful companies and the insights of their family-led leaders\, we’ll explore what it will take to succeed in the private sector over the next 75 years. \nAs executive chair and the third generation of family leadership of GOJO Industries\, Inc.\, Marcella Kanfer Rolnick focuses on vision-setting\, long-term strategy\, sound governance\, and stewardship of the family values and culture that have propelled GOJO to success. Keys to that success: always seeking possibilities for making the world better; working on the forefront of new thinking and innovation; being adaptable in a fast-changing world; team-based co-creation; and non-stop learning. \nMarcella was Vice Chair of GOJO from 2007 to May 2018\, when she became executive chair. Previously\, she worked in several areas of GOJO\, including production\, R&D\, market research\, and market development. Marcella helped lead the launch of Purell Hand Sanitizer in the consumer market and then established the company’s initial e-business capability and digital strategy in the late 1990s. Outside of GOJO\, she had early- and mid-career roles within a consulting firm\, a multi-media publisher\, and a boutique investment company. She also co-leads Walnut Ridge\, a family office that supports the business\, investment\, non-profit philanthropic and family goals\, and activities of the Kanfer family. \nMarcella serves on a wide variety of nonprofit and for-profit boards\, including the Advisory Board of the Fowler Center for Business as an Agent of World Benefit at Case Western Reserve University\, Lippman Kanfer Family Foundation\, and Lippman Kanfer Foundation for Living Torah\, which she chairs. She earned her MBA from the Stanford University Graduate School of Business and her B.A. from Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public & International Affairs. \nMark Smucker is only the sixth CEO in The J.M. Smucker Company’s 127-plus-year history; he also serves as chair of the company’s board. Under his leadership\, Smucker has strengthened the company’s position as a leading manufacturer of beloved products while expanding its role as a world-class marketer of popular brands across growth categories. This success has allowed the company to enhance its partnerships with leading retailers\, meet the evolving needs of consumers\, and increase value for shareholders. \nInspired by Mark’s devotion to being relentlessly consumer-focused\, Smucker has adopted a stronger concentration on agility to meet emerging needs. This is reflected in the company’s investment in data analysis and market intelligence to better predict consumer behavior; corporate strategy\, to identify new growth opportunities; and insights and sales\, to expand distribution and ensure its products are conveniently available to consumers. As Smucker has grown\, Mark has championed and evolved the culture\, guided by the Company’s Basic Beliefs and Our Commitment to Each Other\, that instills pride in employees while creating a positive\, exciting atmosphere to attract new talent. \nIn addition to its leadership as a business and employer\, Smucker has enhanced its position as a responsible organization. Mark has built upon the company’s rich history of corporate responsibility by championing sustainable practices\, a commitment to responsible sourcing\, and a passion for supporting the communities in which Smucker operates.

SUMMARY:Chautauqua Theater Company presents Execution of Justice
DESCRIPTION:Written and Directed by Emily Mann \nIt’s 1978\, and San Francisco is a divided city. The brutal murders of Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk—the nation’s first openly gay elected official—shocked a nation. This gripping documentary play examines the trial of Dan White\, the disgruntled former city supervisor whose reduced voluntary manslaughter conviction\, rather than murder in the first degree\, sparked outrage and introduced the infamous “Twinkie defense.” Ripped from the headlines\, personal interviews\, and court documents of the past but still resonating powerfully today\, this play confronts themes of justice\, prejudice\, and privilege and grapples with the issues of gun violence and systemic homophobia. This contemporary classic challenges us to reflect on our identity as a nation. \nRecommended for audiences ages 13 and older.
