SUMMARY:CHQ Mystic Heart: Mateo Mortellaro
DESCRIPTION:Taking a general and non-sectarian approach to Buddhism\, Mateo Mortellaro (Konchok Tsering Tengye) has years of experience leading meditation and teaching Buddhist philosophy. Mateo started his spiritual journey early in life practicing Zen Buddhism\, eventually shifting focus to the Tibetan tradition\, primarily within the Drikung \,Kagyu and Sakya schools. \nMateo’s main teacher is His Eminence Garchen Rinpoche\, the world-renowned Buddhist master and Yogi. While his main practice and personal approach is of the Buddhist tradition\, Mateo also follows the rich and eclectic teachings of Baba Ram Dass\, giving instructions using language and methods that are accessible to Western students of all levels of experience.\nMateo has been fortunate to receive teachings and instructions directly from masters such as H.H the Sakya Gongma Trichen Rinpoche\,H.E Garchen Rinpoche\, H.E Bardor Tulku Rinpoche\, and Shechen Rabjam Rinpoche. Other influential teachers include His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama\, Ven. Thich Nhat Hanh\, and Kyabje Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche. \nMateo is also the founder of KTT Dharma\, which is aimed at making spiritual teachings available to those interested through media sharing\, interviews\, his writing\, and teachings.

SUMMARY:Mihir A. Desai
DESCRIPTION:Mihir A. Desai is the Mizuho Financial Group Professor of Finance at Harvard Business School and a professor of law at Harvard Law School. He joins Chautauqua’s week on “Innovation in Capitalism: How to Respond to 21st-Century Challenges?” with an examination of financial markets — particularly how recent years have seen much different results than what market watchers might have typically expected\, and what that says for the immediate and long-term future. \nDesai’s areas of expertise include tax policy\, international finance\, and corporate finance\, and his academic publications have appeared in leading economics\, finance and law journals. His work has emphasized the appropriate design of tax policy in a globalized setting\, the links between corporate governance and taxation\, and the internal capital markets of multinational firms. His research has been cited in The Economist\, BusinessWeek\, The New York Times and several other publications. He is a research associate in the National Bureau of Economic Research’s Public Economics and Corporate Finance Programs\, and served as the co-director of the NBER’s India program. \nDesai’s general interest publications include opinion pieces on varied topics\, including tax policy and the effects of globalization on domestic welfare\, in The Washington Post\, The Wall Street Journal\, Tax Notes and The New York Times. He has also written for practitioners in the Harvard Business Reviewon the role of the global CFO\, on how to reform the U.S. tax system\, and how changing incentive systems have contributed to the degradation of American competitiveness. He has testified several times to Congressional bodies\, including most recently to the Senate Finance Committee on corporate tax reform and inversions.

SUMMARY:"Intersections & Diversions" Exhibition - July 23–August 20
DESCRIPTION:These works interrogate the ways in which humans use the grid to build\, organize\, and connect. Using a range of both rigid and pliable materials\, they suggest growth and imply the metaphorical repeating of patterns. A softness balances the collective gridwork structures through curves\, glitches\, and loose threads. From circuit boards to city streets\, we can find connections between acts of mapping\, protecting\, and testing boundaries. SUMMARY:Chautauqua Theater Company presents Execution of Justice
DESCRIPTION:Written and Directed by Emily Mann \nIt’s 1978\, and San Francisco is a divided city. The brutal murders of Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk—the nation’s first openly gay elected official—shocked a nation. This gripping documentary play examines the trial of Dan White\, the disgruntled former city supervisor whose reduced voluntary manslaughter conviction\, rather than murder in the first degree\, sparked outrage and introduced the infamous “Twinkie defense.” Ripped from the headlines\, personal interviews\, and court documents of the past but still resonating powerfully today\, this play confronts themes of justice\, prejudice\, and privilege and grapples with the issues of gun violence and systemic homophobia. This contemporary classic challenges us to reflect on our identity as a nation. \nRecommended for audiences ages 13 and older.
