SUMMARY:CHQ Mystic Heart Meditation: Carol McKiernan
DESCRIPTION:Carol McKiernan grew up at Chautauqua and says that her love of mystical practices began here on the grounds. She was formally introduced to meditation many years ago at an off-season yoga and meditation retreat led by Subagh Singh Khalsa and has been practicing Centering Prayer daily ever since. She has attended many seminars\, workshops\, and retreats offered by Contemplative Outreach\, founded by the late Father Thomas Keating\, a Trappist Monk who was instrumental in the creation of Centering Prayer. Carol practices Centering Prayer with weekly groups in Campus Ministry at Villanova University and at St. David’s Episcopal Church outside of Philadelphia. She has led and participated in many Centering Prayer workshops and groups in the areas surrounding her hometown of Philadelphia. She is a member of the Augustinian Affiliates\, the lay order of the Augustinian Friars and volunteers for the Friars in the Villanova Province. Carol is a past board member and treasurer of the Chautauqua Catholic Community.

SUMMARY:Contemporary Issues Forum: Jim Laurie
DESCRIPTION:Jim Laurie has been a journalist\, broadcaster\, producer and media consultant for more than 50 years. For nearly three decades\, Laurie was an international correspondent for NBC News and ABC News\, reporting from all continents and covering some of the major stories of the late 20th century.   \nHis first assignments in Asia landed him in Vietnam and Cambodia in 1970 to cover the Indochina War. After flying out of Phnom Penh on the American helicopter evacuation of April 12\, 1975\, he returned to Vietnam and became the only American network correspondent to witness the communist takeover of Saigon at month’s end. In 2020\, Laurie published his memoir The Last Helicopter: Two Lives in Indochina\, which forms the basis of his Contemporary Issues Forum lecture for the Chautauqua Women’s Club.  \nLaurie has been at the helm of numerous documentaries and longform TV programs; director of broadcasting at the Journalism and Studies Centre of the University of Hong Kong; head of news and current affairs in Asia for News Corp’s STAR-TV as it built TV channels in India; and founder of his consulting and production company\, FocusAsia Productions.  \nHis reporting for NBC News in 1975 earned Laurie a George Foster Peabody Award. Other honors over the decades include multiple Emmies\, the Overseas Press Club Award\, New York Festival prizes\, and Amnesty International Awards for human rights reporting.
