SUMMARY:Michael Grunwald
DESCRIPTION:Michael Grunwald is an award-winning journalist and bestselling author who has written about U.S. public policy and politics for three decades. He is best known for his coverage of climate change and the environment. His latest book\, We Are Eating the Earth: The Race to Fix Our Food System and Save Our Climate\, is a groundbreaking piece of reportage on the fight to fix our food system. In the book\, Grunwald argues that humanity has started to recognize the magnitude of its food and climate problem and is making it worse; it is also a hopeful account of the brilliant researchers and entrepreneurs devising new ways to produce more food with less impact. This reporting in We Are Eating the Earth will inform his remarks to continue Chautauqua’s week on “The Future of Food.” \nGrunwald is a New York Times contributing opinions writer and former staff writer for The Washington Post\, Time and Politico Magazine. He is also the author of The Swamp\, a widely acclaimed book about the Everglades\, and The New New Deal\, about the Obama Administration’s economic policies. Grunwald wrote The Washington Post’s lead news story about the attacks of September 11\, 2001\, covered the last eight presidential campaigns\, and has written cover stories about everything from the failure of U.S. transportation policy to the marketing of Barack Obama to his own family’s daily reliance on the power of government. \nGrunwald has won numerous honors for his work\, including the George Polk Award for national reporting and the Worth Bingham Prize for investigative reporting.

SUMMARY:Masters Series Masterclass: Good Food Belongs to People\, Not a Landfill
DESCRIPTION:At the intersection of food insecurity and climate change lies one powerful opportunity: food rescue. Food waste and food insecurity are often treated as separate crises — yet they stem from the same structural inefficiencies in our food system. In the United States\, up to 40% of food produced goes uneaten\, even as 1 in 7 households face food insecurity. Most wasted food ends up in landfills\, where it becomes a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions. 412 Food Rescue in Pittsburgh is transforming how communities respond to these challenges. By mobilizing volunteers through innovative\, people-powered technology\, the organization rescues fresh\, nutritious food that would otherwise go to waste and delivers it directly to neighbors experiencing food insecurity. In this way\, the organization operates at the intersection of food waste and environmental sustainability\, redirecting surplus food to communities experiencing food insecurity while reducing landfill methane emissions. In this session\, leadership from 412 Food Rescue will examine how technology-enabled logistics\, volunteer mobilization\, and cross-sector partnerships can serve as civic infrastructure — addressing hunger\, advancing environmental sustainability\, and strengthening local food systems. Participants will explore how surplus food recovery functions not as charity\, but as systems-level intervention in both public health and climate resilience that has national and global impact.
