As young adults\, they’re on the precipice of new ventures: Ursula as a budding journalist in Manhattan\, Alvin as an engineering intern for Google\, Jen as a naïve freshman at NYU\, and Duncan as a promising newcomer on his high school football team. Their lives are upended when a series of violent\, senseless attacks across America creates a national panic\, prompting a government policy that pushes Vietnamese Americans into internment camps. Jen and Duncan are sent with their mother to Camp Tacoma while Ursula and Alvin receive exemptions.  \nCut off entirely from the outside world\, forced to work jobs they hate\, Jen and Duncan try to withstand long\, dusty days in camp and acclimate to life without the internet. That is\, until Jen discovers a way to get messages to the outside. Her first instinct is to reach out to Ursula\, who sees this connection as a chance to tell the world about the horrors of camp—and as an opportunity to bolster her own reporting career in the process.  \nInformed by real-life events\, from Japanese incarceration to the Vietnam War and modern-day immigrant detention\, Kevin Nguyen’s novel gives us a version of reality only a few degrees away from our own. Moving and finely attuned to both the brutalities and mundanities of racism\, Mỹ Documents is a strangely funny and touching portrait of American ambition\, fear\, and family. The story of the Nguyens is one of resilience and how we return to one another\, and to ourselves\, after tragedy.  \nKevin Nguyen is the author of the novel New Waves. He is the features editor at The Verge and was previously a senior editor at GQ. He lives in Brooklyn.  \nNguyen will replace the previously announced Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle author Angie Thomas\, who was originally scheduled for August 7. Her book\, Blackout\, remains a 2025 CLSC selection.

SUMMARY:Mary Anne Case
DESCRIPTION:Mary Anne Case is the Arnold I. Shure Professor of Law at the University of Chicago Law School. A graduate of Yale College and the Harvard Law School\, Mary Anne Case studied at the University of Munich; litigated for Paul\, Weiss\, Rifkind\, Wharton & Garrison; and was professor of law and Class of 1966 Research Professor at the University of Virginia before joining the Law School faculty. She also served as a visiting professor at New York University in 1996-97 and in 1999\, a Bosch Public Policy Fellow at the American Academy in Berlin in 2004\, a Crane Fellow in Law and Public Affairs at Princeton University in 2006-07\, a Samuel Rubin Visiting Professor at Columbia Law School in 2013\, a Fernand Braudel Fellow at the European University Institute in 2016\, and a Guest Professor at Goethe University Frankfurt in 2018. \nSubjects Case has taught include feminist jurisprudence\, constitutional law\, regulation of sexuality\, marriage\, family law\, sex discrimination\, religious freedom\, and European legal systems. She is the convener of the Workshop on Regulating Family\, Sex\, and Gender and board member of the Center for the Study of Gender and Sexuality. While diverse research interests include German contract law\, theological anthropology\, and the First Amendment\, her scholarship to date has concentrated on the regulation of sex\, gender\, sexuality\, religion\, and family; and the early history of feminism.

Charly Palmer’s illustrations are featured in the book “How Sweet the Sound\,” written by Kwame Alexander\, Chautauqua’s Michael I. Rudell Artistic Director of Literary Arts and Writer in Residence. \nCharly Palmer is a renowned award-winning fine artist and illustrator known for his compelling artwork that reflects African ancestry and contemporary experiences. Through his paintings\, Palmer creates rhythmic visual narratives that challenge viewers’ perceptions. His innate ability to capture the nuances of Blackness is expressed through rich depth\, intricate patterns\, symbols\, and textures. Notable achievements include designing the Black Heritage Stamp honoring Judge Constance Baker Motley\, creating the album cover for John Legend’s “Bigger Love\,” and illustrating the cover for TIME Magazine’s “America Must Change.” He also co-authored the award-winning “New Brownies Book: A Love Letter To Black Families.”
