It is this vision of creating educational environments where different ideas flourish that Beilock brings to the Chautauqua Lecture Series in a week dedicated to “Themes of Transformation: Forces Shaping Our Tomorrow.” \nUnder Beilock’s leadership\, Dartmouth has launched the first-of-its-kind “Dartmouth Dialogues” initiative\, which facilitates conversations and skills that bridge political and personal divides; creates a culture where all students are able to engage with viewpoints and perspectives different than their own; and in turn\, advances meaningful debate and conversations on the most pressing issues of our time. \nA distinguished cognitive scientist\, Beilock is also one of the world’s foremost experts on performance under pressure. Among her honors for that work are a CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation and the Troland Research Award from the National Academy of Sciences. She is a member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences\, as well as the author of 120 peer-reviewed papers and two critically-acclaimed books — Choke and How The Body Knows Its Mind — published in more than a dozen languages. Her 2017 TED Talk on performing under pressure has been viewed more than 2.7 million times. \nBeilock earned her bachelor of science in cognitive science from the University of California\, San Diego\, and doctorate degrees in psychology and kinesiology from Michigan State University.

SUMMARY:The Wood Brothers
DESCRIPTION:The Wood Brothers have learned to trust their hearts. For the better part of two decades\, they’ve cemented their reputation as freethinking songwriters\, road warriors\, and community builders\, creating a catalog of diverse music and a loyal audience who’ve grown alongside them through the years. That evolution continues with Heart is the Hero\, the band’s eighth studio album. Recorded analog to 16-track tape\, this latest effort finds its three creators embracing the chemistry of their acclaimed live shows by capturing their performances in real-time direct from the studio floor with nary a computer in sight. An acoustic-driven album that electrifies\, Heart is the Hero is stocked with songs that target not only the heart\, but the head and hips\, too. \n “We love records that come from the era of less tracks and more care\,” explains co-founder Oliver Wood. “When you use a computer during the tracking process\, you have an infinite number of tracks at your disposal\, which implies that nothing is permanent\, and everything can be fixed. Tape gives you limitations that force you to be creative and intentional. You don’t look at the music on a screen; you listen to it\, and you learn to focus on the feeling of the performance.“ \nThroughout Heart Is The Hero\, those performances are matched by the visceral storytelling and songwriting chops that have turned The Wood Brothers into Grammy-nominated leaders of American roots music\, even as their music reaches far beyond the genre’s borders. The stripped-down swagger of “Pilgrim” underscores Oliver’s reminder to slow down and experience each moment as an interactive observer rather than a passive tourist. A similar theme anchors “Between the Beats\,” where Oliver draws upon a meditation technique — maintaining one’s focus on the space between heartbeats — to reach a new level of presence. The gentle sway of country-soul gem “Rollin’ On\,” featuring horns by Matt Glassmeyer and Roy Agee\, expounds on the time-honored tradition of love as the guiding light through darkness\, while ”Mean Man World” finds Chris Wood singing about his responsibilities as a father whose young daughter is poised to inherit an uncertain future. “Line Those Pockets” is a universal call for mercy and understanding over materialism. “Everybody’s just trying to be happy\, so put your money away; line those pockets with grace\,” the band sings in three-part harmony during the song’s chorus\, which emphasizes compassion over cash as the world’s true currency. Together\, these songs offer a snapshot of a spirited\, independent-minded group at the peak of its powers\, always pushing forward and seeking to evolve beyond what’s come before. \nThe Wood Brothers have partnered with American Friends of Canadian Conservation so that $1 per ticket will support The Nature Trust of British Columbia (NTBC) in their efforts to conserve ecologically-rich wetlands and protect irreplaceable land from development. Every $1 donated will be matched by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service with $2 so more endangered wetlands can be saved. If you’d like to learn more\, please visit the Discover More Link.

SUMMARY:James Carville & Kristen Soltis Anderson
DESCRIPTION:Kristen Soltis Anderson steps in for Mary Matalin to join James Carville and open the 2025 Summer Assembly at Chautauqua Institution\, taking the Amphitheater stage for a conversation exploring themes of transformation in our current political and media moments. They will be led in conversation by longtime friend of Chautauqua Norman Ornstein\, senior fellow emeritus at the American Enterprise Institute. Key players on the national political stage — Anderson is a widely read and highly regarded political pollster\, and Carville has 40 years of experience in politics\, including with the Bill Clinton campaign and administration — Anderson and Carville will consider “Forces Shaping Our Tomorrow” as they also reflect on transformative eras they’ve experienced and helped shape. \nKristen Soltis Anderson is a pollster\, speaker\, commentator\, and author of The Selfie Vote: Where Millennials Are Leading America (And How Republicans Can Keep Up). The founding partner of Echelon Insights\, an opinion research and analytics firm that serves brands\, trade associations\, nonprofits\, and political clients. Anderson regularly advises corporate and government leaders on polling and messaging strategy\, and has become one of the foremost experts on the Millennial generation. She also leads focus groups for The New York Times’ opinion section’s “America in Focus” series. \nAnderson is an on-air political contributor at CNN and previously has been a contributor to Fox News Channel and ABC News. She has appeared on programs such as “The Daily Show\,” “Meet the Press” and HBO’s “Real Time With Bill Maher.” She is also a contributing opinion writer at The New York Times. Previously\, Anderson hosted “The Trendline” on SiriusXM P.O.T.U.S and “The Pollsters” podcast. She has served as a fellow at Harvard’s Institute of Politics and Georgetown’s Institute of Politics and Public Service. She received her master’s degree in government from Johns Hopkins University and her bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the University of Florida. \nJames Carville is America’s best-known political consultant. His long list of electoral successes evidences a knack for steering overlooked campaigns to unexpected landslide victories and for remaking political underdogs into upset winners. His winning streak began in 1986\, when he managed the gubernatorial victory of Robert Casey in Pennsylvania. In 1987\, Carville helped guide Wallace Wilkinson to the governor’s seat in Kentucky. Carville continued his streak with a win in New Jersey with Frank Lautenberg elected to the U.S. Senate. He managed the successful 1990 gubernatorial campaign of Georgia’s Lieutenant Governor Zell Miller\, and in 1991 drew national attention when he led Sen. Harris Wofford from 40 points behind in the polls to an upset landslide victory. His most prominent victory was in 1992\, when he helped William Jefferson Clinton win the presidency. \nIn recent years\, Carville has focused on campaigns in more than 23 countries around the globe. A best-selling author\, Carville is also a founder\, along with pollster Stanley Greenberg\, of the independent\, non-profit polling organization Democracy Corps. A fellow at Louisiana State University’s Manship School of Mass Communication\, Carville co-hosts the weekly Politicon podcast “Politics War Room” with journalist Al Hunt. \nNorman J. Ornstein is a senior fellow emeritus at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI)\, where he has been studying politics\, elections and the U.S. Congress for more than four decades. Along with Thomas Mann and Michael Malbin\, Ornstein created “Vital Statistics on Congress” in 1980\, a go-to reference guide that provides impartial data for congressional watchers\, and is updated every two years. He often appears on C-SPAN\, CBS\, CNN\, Fox News Channel\, MSNBC\, NPR\, and “PBS NewsHour\,” among other outlets. Through his family foundation named in honor of his late son Matthew\, Ornstein helped spearhead the documentary “The Definition of Insanity\,” about criminal justice and mental illness\, which premiered at the Miami Film Festival in March 2020\, aired nationally on PBS on April 14\, 2020\, and was the basis for a stirring 2021 Chautauqua Amphitheater conversation.

SUMMARY:Counting Crows: The Complete Sweets! Tour
DESCRIPTION:For more than two decades\, the GRAMMY and Academy Award-nominated rock band Counting Crows have enchanted listeners worldwide with their intensely soulful and intricate take on timeless rock & roll. Exploding onto the music scene in 1993 with their multi-platinum breakout album\, August and Everything After\, the band has gone on to release seven studio albums\, selling more than 20 million records worldwide\, and is revered as one of the world’s most pre-eminent live touring rock bands. \nIn October 1996\, the band’s double-platinum sophomore studio album\, Recovering the Satellites\, debuted at number one and further solidified their growing reputation as one of the leading American alternative rock bands in the world. A follow-up to their early success\, Counting Crows went on to release This Desert Life (1999)\, Hard Candy (2002)\, Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings (2008)\, Underwater Sunshine (Or What We Did on Our Summer Vacation) (2012)\, Echoes of the Outlaw Roadshow (2013) and Somewhere Under Wonderland (2014.) In 2004\, Counting Crows recorded the chart-topping “Accidentally in Love” for the animated motion picture Shrek 2. The instant success of the track earned them an Academy Award nomination for “Best Original Song” at the 2005 Academy Awards\, a Golden Globe nomination for “Best Original Song” and a GRAMMY Award nomination for “Best Song Written for a Motion Picture\, Television or Other Visual Media.” \nIn September 2014\, Counting Crows released their critically acclaimed seventh studio album\, Somewhere Under Wonderland\, which debuted at No. 10 on the charts and was heralded by The Daily Telegraph as “… the best collection of songs since their debut.” The album consisted of nine sprawling tracks around rich sonic tapestries\, which yielded some of the most grandiose yet intimate songs Counting Crows had recorded to date. 2018 marked 25 years since the band’s inception and sent Adam Duritz\, Jim Bogios\, David Bryson\, Charlie Gillingham\, David Immergluck\, Millard Powers\, and Dan Vickrey back on the road for the “25 YEARS AND COUNTING” tour. In 2021\, Counting Crows ranked #8 on Billboard’s “Greatest of All Time: Adult Alternative Artists” 25th-anniversary chart. \nAfter seven years\, Adam Duritz and Counting Crows released Butter Miracle: Suite One in May 2021 to rave reviews. The band also kicked off their first tour since 2018\, “The Butter Miracle Tour\,” from 2021 through 2023\, with sell-out performances across North America\, Europe\, Australia and New Zealand.

SUMMARY:Is American Civic Culture the Source of Our Challenges?
DESCRIPTION:Join Chautauqua Institution in Washington\, D.C.\, or online\, for a special program hosted at the American Enterprise Institute and moderated by 2024–25 Chautauqua Perry Fellow in Democracy Melody Barnes. As the United States approaches its 250th anniversary\, American democracy faces profound challenges in the form of declining trust in institutions and growing political and cultural divides. While policy solutions and institutional reforms are essential\, they are not enough. The strength of our democracy depends on a civic culture that sustains it. Can we foster a shared set of norms\, values\, and beliefs that empower our institutions and help us navigate our differences? \nPresented in partnership with AEI and the University of Virginia’s Karsh Institute of Democracy\, this program — titled “Is American Civic Culture the Source of Our Challenges” — will be a thought-provoking conversation on what it will take to renew the foundation of American democracy. Joining the panel discussion are E.J. Dionne\, senior fellow and W. Averell Harriman Chair in American Governance at Brookings; William A. Galston\, senior fellow and Ezra K. Zilkha Chair in Governance Studies at Brookings; Hahrie Han\, director of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Agora Institute at Johns Hopkins University; Yuval Levin\, director of Social\, Cultural\, and Constitutional Studies at AEI; and Christine Rosen\, senior fellow at AEI. Guiding the conversation will be Barnes\, who serves as executive director of the University of Virginia’s Karsh Institute of Democracy. \nVisit AEI’s website to register (for free) while seats are available\, or register to watch online. \nPanelists Dionne\, Rosen and Barnes are all previous presenters on lecture stages at Chautauqua; AEI and Brookings are Chautauqua’s program partners for the 2025 Week Four Chautauqua Lecture Series exploration of “The Future of the American Experiment.”
