DESCRIPTION:Chris Hayes is the Emmy Award–winning host of “All In with Chris Hayes” on MSNBC\, editor-at-large of The Nation and the author of The Sirens’ Call: How Attention Became the World’s Most Endangered Resource. In The Sirens’ Call\, Hayes argues that society is in the midst of an epoch-defining transition\, in which attention has become a commodified resource extracted from us\, and from which we are increasingly alienated. Returning to the Chautauqua Lecture Series to discuss this work\, Hayes closes a week dedicated to “Themes of Transformation: Forces Shaping Our Tomorrow.” \nIn addition to The Sirens’ Call\, Hayes is the New York Times bestselling author of A Colony in a Nation and Twilight of the Elites: America After Meritocracy. Previously\, Hayes hosted the weekend program “Up w/ Chris Hayes\,” which premiered in 2011. Prior to joining MSNBC as an anchor\, he had previously served as a frequent substitute host for “The Rachel Maddow Show” and “The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell.” He became an MSNBC contributor in 2010 and has been with The Nation since 2007. \nHe is a former fellow at Harvard University’s Edmond J. Safra Foundation Center for Ethics. From 2008 to 2010\, he was a Bernard Schwartz Fellow at the New America Foundation\, and from 2005 to 2006 was a Schumann Center Writing Fellow at In These Times. His essays\, articles\, and reviews have appeared in New York Times Magazine\, TIME\, Nation\, American Prospect\, New Republic\, Washington Monthly\, The Guardian and Chicago Reader. \nHayes graduated from Brown University with a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy.

DESCRIPTION:Jim Wallis is a writer\, teacher\, preacher and justice advocate who believes the gospel of Jesus must be emancipated from its cultural and political captivities. He is a New York Times bestselling author\, public theologian\, preacher and commentator on ethics and public life. \nHe is the inaugural holder of the Chair in Faith and Justice and the founding Director of the Georgetown University Center on Faith and Justice. He is the founder of Sojourners\, and is the author of 12 books\, including America’s Original Sin: Racism\, White Privilege and the Bridge to America; God’s Politics: Why the Right Gets It Wrong and the Left Doesn’t Get it; The Great Awakening; The Call to Conversion; and Christ in Crisis: Reclaiming Jesus in a Time of Fear\, Hate\, and Violence; and host of the popular podcast The Soul of the Nation. His latest book is the New York Times bestseller The False White Gospel: Rejecting Christian Nationalism\, Reclaiming True Faith\, and Refounding Democracy.  \nHe served on President Obama’s White House Advisory Council on Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships and has taught faith and public life courses at Harvard and Georgetown University. He also serves as a Research Fellow at the Georgetown University Berkley Center for Religion\, Peace and World Affairs. Wallis has previously taught at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government and was awarded an honorary doctorate in humane letters from Georgetown University in 2007 when he gave the college commencement address.

SUMMARY:CHQ Mystic Heart: Jissai Prince-Cherry
DESCRIPTION:Venerable Jissai Prince-Cherry began practicing Zen in 1994. Since then\, she has maintained a daily personal practice and regularly participates in group sittings\, intensive Zen meditation retreats\, and periods of residential training including at a Zen monastery in Japan. She works closely with her teacher\, Roshi Bodhin Kjolhede\, successor to Roshi Philip Kapleau\, the founder of the Rochester Zen Center. With her teacher’s on-going guidance and support\, Jissai began instructing others in Zen meditation in 1999. In 2022\, she was ordained as a Zen Buddhist priest and received the name “Jissai” (pronounced JEE-sigh) which means “true encounter.” Jissai is delighted to serve both the Rochester Zen Center and the Louisville Zen Center.
