SUMMARY:Indigo Girls
DESCRIPTION:Released in 1989\, Indigo Girls’ eponymous major label debut sold over two million copies under the power of singles “Closer to Fine” and “Kid Fears” and turned Indigo Girls into one of the most successful folk duos in history. Over a thirty-five-year career that began in clubs around their native Atlanta\, Georgia\, the multi-Grammy-winning duo of Emily Saliers and Amy Ray has recorded sixteen studio albums\, sold over 15 million records\, and built a dedicated\, enduring following across the globe. Rolling Stone describes them as the “ideal duet partners.” Committed and uncompromising activists\, they work on issues like immigration reform (El Refugio)\, LGBTQ advocacy\, education (Imagination Library)\, death penalty reform\, and Native American rights. They are co-founders of Honor the Earth\, a non-profit dedicated to the survival of sustainable Native communities\, Indigenous environmental justice\, and green energy solutions. \nTheir latest record\, Look Long is a stirring and eclectic collection of songs that finds the duo of Amy Ray and Emily Saliers reunited in the studio with their strongest backing band to date. “We joke about being old\, but what is old when it comes to music? We’re still a bar band at heart\,” says Saliers. “While our lyrics and writing approach may change\, our passion for music feels the same as it did when we were 25-years-old.” “As time has gone on\, our audience has become more expansive and diverse\, giving me a sense of joy\,” she adds. To hear those collective voices raise into one\, singing along and overpowering the band itself\, one realizes the importance Indigo Girls’ music has in this moment. In our often-terrifying present\, we are all in search of a daily refuge\, a stolen hour or two\, to engage with something that brings us joy\, perspective\, or maybe just calm. As one bar band once put it\, “We go to the doctor\, we go to the mountains…we go to the Bible\, we go through the work out.” For millions\, they go to the Indigo Girls. On Look Long they’ll find a creative partnership certain of its bearings\, forging a way forward.

SUMMARY:Gilbert King
DESCRIPTION:Chautauqua Literary & Scientific Circle – Bone Valley: A True Story of Injustice and Redemption in the Heart of Florida \nFrom Pulitzer Prize-winning author Gilbert King comes a chilling exploration of one of America’s most haunting wrongful conviction cases. Based on the hit podcast\, Bone Valley dives into the dark heart of rural Florida\, where a young man’s life was upended by a tragic miscarriage of justice. \nIn 1987\, Leo Schofield was arrested and charged with the murder of his wife\, Michelle. Always insistent on his innocence\, he was poorly served by his legal defense: the investigation was sloppy\, the case flimsy\, and numerous pieces of evidence were ignored. He was sentenced to life in prison. \nOver thirty years later\, Gilbert King is tipped off to Leo’s case and is astonished by what he found: layers of corruption\, flawed evidence\, and deep-seated errors. He can’t shake the story and starts to get to know Leo and his family. Leo shows an incomprehensible amount of grace and love about his situation\, which spurs Gilbert even more to tell his story. \nBone Valley is at once a revelatory investigation into a murder\, a chilling portrait of the criminal justice system\, and a uniquely powerful story of grace and redemption. Gilbert King has written a new classic of narrative nonfiction. \nGilbert King is the author of Bone Valley: A True Story of Injustice and Redemption in the Heart of Florida. He is also the host and producer of Bone Valley\, a multi-part narrative podcast about the wrongful conviction of Leo Schofield. SUMMARY:Wynton Marsalis
DESCRIPTION:Opening Week Four\, with a morning lecture on how the arts can unite us during moments of change\, is Wynton Marsalis\, the world-renowned trumpeter\, bandleader\, composer and a leading advocate of American culture. He will close the week with a rousing performance by the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and appear mid-week to premier his newest orchestral composition\, Liberty Symphony\, performed by the JLCO in collaboration with Chautauqua’s Music School Festival Orchestra. \nMarsalis presently serves as managing and artistic director of Jazz at Lincoln Center\, the director of jazz studies at The Juilliard School\, and president of the Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation. \nHe has been called the “Pied Piper” of jazz and the “Doctor of Swing.” Since his recording debut in 1982\, he has released 136 jazz\, classical and alternative recordings and won numerous awards. He regularly performs in the most prestigious concert halls and has been known to play until all hours of the morning in the most inconspicuous local clubs. From the very beginning of his career\, education has been vital to his mission. He has taught and mentored a voluminous number of musicians who have gone on to play\, teach and advocate in their own brilliant ways. Through these relationships Marsalis has ensured that the legacy of jazz music will continue to propagate for generations to come. \nOver the past four and half decades\, Marsalis has rekindled and animated widespread international interest in jazz through performances\, educational activities\, books\, curricula and relentless advocacy on public platforms. Today\, Marsalis continues the renaissance that he sparked in the early 1980s\, attracting new generations of young talent to jazz and illuminating the mythic meanings of jazz fundamentals. \nMarsalis performs and composes across the entire spectrum of jazz and has written jazz-influenced chamber music and symphonic works for revered classical ensembles across the US and abroad. He is inspired to experiment in an ever-widening palette of forms and concepts that constitute some of the most advanced thinking in modern jazz and in American music on the broad scale. \nMarsalis’ core beliefs are based on jazz fundamentals: freedom and individual creativity (improvisation)\, collective action and good manners (swing)\, as well as acceptance\, gratitude and resilience (the blues). Marsalis believes that music has the power to elevate our quality of life and lead us to both higher and lower levels of consciousness. He maintains that music can elevate the quality of human engagement for individuals\, social networks and cultural institutions throughout the world.

SUMMARY:Diane Ackerman
DESCRIPTION:Chautauqua Literary & Scientific Circle — A Natural History of the Senses AND A Feast in Every Sense: The Mystery\, Marvel\, and New Science of Our Senses \nOriginally published in 1991\, A Natural History of the Senses is a vibrant celebration of our ability to smell\, taste\, hear\, touch\, and see. Poet\, pilot\, naturalist\, journalist\, essayist\, explorer\, Diane Ackerman weaves together scientific fact with lore\, history\, and voluptuous description. The resulting work is a startling and enchanting account of how human beings experience and savor the world. \nIt asks and answers such questions as: How do perfumers know which scents allure? Why does music move us? How did kissing on the mouth begin? What is our craving for chocolate? It illuminates the phenomenon of pheromones and looks into the question of whether they control us. Incorporated in its superb reporting and splendid prose are fascinating facts: Humans have about 10\,000 taste buds\, cows 25\,000. What are they tasting\, and what are we missing? It probes such everyday mysteries as why leaves turn color in the fall and why we see them in color; and what it is that causes lovers to feel delight when they touch. A Natural History of the Senses is at once an ingenious exploration of the physical processes underlying our perceptions and an eloquent ode to life. \nA companion work to A Natural History of the Senses and forthcoming in January 2027\, A Feast in Every Sense is Diane Ackerman’s luscious and tender journey into the mystery of our modern sensory lives\, a grand tour that captures the heady feelings of being alive. She introduces us to receptors that create the creamy sensation of a perfectly ripe avocado\, sound waves that allow us to identify hot versus cold water by sound alone\, skin sensors that lower pain and change brain chemistry at a lover’s touch. \nThe sensory universe colors every morsel of human existence. Why does sitting in a hard chair make you a harder bargainer? Why does Tylenol decrease empathy? Why does sipping a bitter drink invite harsher moral judgments? How does the time of day you receive a flu vaccine or an organ transplant affect its success? Is airplane food really that dull\, or do our cravings and sense of taste warp at altitude? What sensory rebels have lived at the frontiers of perception? So many mysteries\, good and bad\, can only be understood through our senses. \nAckerman also uses new scientific discoveries\, like our host of Secret Senses—ever-vigilant scouts—to explain life’s intricacies and understand how the world’s endless stimuli combine with our inner lives to form our deepest thoughts\, feelings\, hardships and joys. \nBlending history\, science\, personal experience\, and a poet’s eye\, A Feast in Every Sense is both an ambrosial display of how we process the beauty around us and a call to rediscover what it means to be fully embodied and alive in a world brimming with wonders. \nPoet\, essayist\, and naturalist\, Diane Ackerman is the author of over two dozen highly acclaimed works of nonfiction and poetry\, including The New York Times bestsellers The Zookeeper’s Wife\, A Natural History of the Senses\, and The Human Age. Ms. Ackerman has received the Stephen Hawking Medal for Communicating Science\, P.E.N. Henry David Thoreau Award for Nature Writing\, Orion Book Award\, John O’Donohue Poetry Award\, John Burroughs Medal for Nature Writing\, Guggenheim Fellowship\, Lavan Poetry Prize\, an honorary doctorate from Kenyon College\, among many others\, as well as being celebrated as a Literary Lion by the New York Public Library. Several of her books have been Pulitzer Prize and National Book Circle Critics Award finalists. In 2016\, she was elected to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. She also has the distinction of having a molecule named after her —dianeackerone— a sex pheromone in pygmy crocodiles. Ms. Ackerman has an M.F.A. and PhD from Cornell\, and has taught at a number of universities\, including Columbia and Cornell. Her essays about nature and human nature have been appearing for decades in the New York Times\, New Yorker\, American Scholar\, Smithsonian\, Nautilus\, National Geographic and many other journals. She hosted a five-hour PBS television series inspired by A Natural History of the Senses. In 2017\, The Zookeeper’s Wife was made into a feature film starring Jessica Chastain.
