The Rev. Dr. Richard Kannwischer is the eighth Senior Pastor of the seven-thousand-member Peachtree Presbyterian Church in Atlanta, Georgia. Richard has been a pastor for twenty-five years and has served congregations in Texas, California, and the NYC metropolitan area. He studied business at Trinity University in San Antonio before completing his master’s from Princeton Seminary and his Doctorate from Fuller Theological Seminary. Richard has been honored to serve as a member of the board of trustees for all three of his higher educational institutions. He is currently a Board of Director at the historic Fox Theatre in Atlanta.

Richard and Kelly met in graduate school, so they fell in love debating theology and eating ice cream as a reward after an evening in the library. Kelly is the founder of OptUp consulting and is passionate about empowering momentum for organizations and noble causes. They have two adult children. One is a student at the University of Georgia, and the other attends Rich’s alma mater, Trinity University. Richard loves to read, to swim and run, and if you really want a great story, ask him about his hole-in-one in golf.

Ernestine Ashworth contemplates her cosmic insignificance on her 17th birthday, a feeling that follows her through the swift passage of time. In the blink of an eye, she reaches her 18th birthday, hurtles toward her 41st, accelerates into her 70th, and glides into her 101st. Birthday Candles is a heartfelt and humorous story that guides the audience through the significant, challenging, and remarkable moments as time inexorably marches on. One ordinary woman’s life is measured by the simple tradition of baking a birthday cake.

Originally developed as a New Play Workshop during the 2017 season and then performed around the country, Chautauqua will finally mount its own full production of Birthday Candles. What a fitting way to open CTC’s mainstage season and celebrate Chautauqua Institution’s 150th birthday!

Kori Schake

Kori Schake is a senior fellow and the director of foreign and defense policy studies at the American Enterprise Institute, where her research areas include national security strategy, NATO, and alliances and U.S.-led international order. She returns to the Chautauqua Lecture Series for a week on “What We Got Wrong: Learning from Our Mistakes” to examine the contemporary legacy of American warfare — from Vietnam through Afghanistan to the current day — asking what mistakes we’ve learned from and those we’ve not, and how this can inform American military strategy as we engage in a new era of diplomacy and defense.

Before joining AEI, Schake was the deputy director-general of the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London. She has had a distinguished career in government, working at the U.S. State Department, the U.S. Department of Defense, and the National Security Council at the White House. She has also taught at King’s College, Stanford, West Point, Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies, National Defense University, and the University of Maryland, and served as senior policy adviser to the McCain-Palin campaign in 2008.

Schake is the author of five books, including America vs the West: Can the Liberal World Order Be Preserved?; Safe Passage: The Transition from British to American Hegemony; State of Disrepair: Fixing the Culture and Practices of the State Department; and Managing American Hegemony: Essays on Power in a Time of Dominance. She is also the coeditor, along with former Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis, of Warriors & Citizens: American Views of Our Military.

Schake holds a PhD and MA in government and politics from the University of Maryland, as well as an MPM from the University of Maryland School of Public Policy. She received her bachelor’s degree in international relations from Stanford University.

Lynn Underwood

Lynn Underwood does research on stress, social support, quality of life, compassionate love, neuroethics and spirituality, through the lenses of science and the arts. She has written books including Spiritual Connection in Daily Life and co-edited books such as Social Support Measurement and Intervention and The Science of Compassionate Love. She conducts workshops using a set of sixteen questions she developed, the Daily Spiritual Experience Scale, helping people to dive more deeply into the ordinary experiences of spiritual connection in their days and communicate with others. This scale has been translated into over forty languages, works for those from religious and non-religious backgrounds, and is used in hundreds of studies. It predicts things like less burnout and addiction and more resiliency. She has been interviewed for ABC, Australian Public Radio, and Philosophy Talks on NPR.

She works with organizations who are interested in the spiritual dimension of their work and has consulted on research projects with Harvard, Yale, University of Connecticut and internationally. Her current research and writing is focused on how difficult circumstances can enable us to flourish. Contemplative practice and doing art are important parts of her life.

She is currently a Senior Research Associate at the Inamori International Center for Ethics at Case Western Reserve University. She has been Professor of Biomedical Humanities, and Vice President for research programs for a private foundation. She studied medicine at the University of Iowa, and earned her PhD from Queen’s University in the UK. She was a member of the Advisory Board of the National Center for Rehabilitation Research of the NIH, was awarded a Library of Congress Kluge Fellowship, and coordinated a project on Quality of Life at the World Health Organization.

Robert Oppenheimer — the definitive biography of the theoretical physicist and “father of the atomic bomb” that served as inspiration for director and screenwriter Christopher Nolan’s most recent film, “Oppenheimer.” A relentless chronicler of history and a consummate storyteller, Bird elevates lessons from the past to undeniable relevance for audiences of today. He joins the Chautauqua Lecture Series in a week confronting “What We Got Wrong: Learning from Our Mistakes” to discuss the legacy of J. Robert Oppenheimer, whose groundbreaking work altered the course of history, and help us navigate the tremendous ethical and moral ramifications of that work.

For American Prometheus, Bird and his late co-author Martin J. Sherwin were awarded the Pulitzer Prize for biography, the National Books Critics Circle Award and the Duff Cooper Prize for History. Epstein serves as the humanist chaplain at Harvard University and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and as Convener for Ethical Life at the MIT Office of Religious, Spiritual, and Ethical Life. Described as a “godfather to the [humanist] movement” by The New York Times Magazine, Epstein was also named “one of the top faith and moral leaders in the United States” by Faithful Internet, a project coordinated by the United Church of Christ with assistance from the Stanford Law School Center for Internet and Society, for his efforts to bring together atheists, agnostics, and allies, as part of an ancient and ever-evolving ethical tradition that can be called humanism. The Rev. Dr. Richard Kannwischer is the eighth Senior Pastor of the seven-thousand-member Peachtree Presbyterian Church in Atlanta, Georgia. Richard has been a pastor for twenty-five years and has served congregations in Texas, California, and the NYC metropolitan area. He studied business at Trinity University in San Antonio before completing his master’s from Princeton Seminary and his Doctorate from Fuller Theological Seminary. Richard has been honored to serve as a member of the board of trustees for all three of his higher educational institutions. He is currently a Board of Director at the historic Fox Theatre in Atlanta.

Richard and Kelly met in graduate school, so they fell in love debating theology and eating ice cream as a reward after an evening in the library. Kelly is the founder of OptUp consulting and is passionate about empowering momentum for organizations and noble causes. They have two adult children. One is a student at the University of Georgia, and the other attends Rich’s alma mater, Trinity University. Phosphorus has played a critical role in some of the most lethal substances on earth: firebombs, rat poison, nerve gas. But it’s also the key component of one of the most vital: fertilizer, which has sustained life for billions of people. The story of phosphorus spans the globe and vast tracts of human history, and over the past century, phosphorus has made farming vastly more productive, feeding the enormous increase in the human population. Amy C. Edmondson is the Novartis Professor of Leadership and Management at the Harvard Business School where she studies teaming, psychological safety and organizational learning. The No. 1-ranked management thinker in the world by Thinkers50, she has been studying psychological safety and workplace behaviors for more than 20 years. Her most recent book, Right Kind of Wrong: The Science of Failing Well, will frame her presentation for the Chautauqua Lecture Series, concluding a week on “What We Got Wrong: Learning from Our Mistakes.”

In Right Kind of Wrong, which won the Financial Times and Schroders Business Book of the Year 2023, Edmondson considers what she calls “intelligent failures” as the vital stepping stones that lead to innovation and discovery. Diving deep into the distinction between intelligent, basic and complex failures, she explains the proactive steps that can prevent harmful failures in the future. Edmonson’s other books include The Fearless Organization: Creating Psychological Safety in the Workplace for Learning, Innovation, and Growth, and her articles have been published in numerous academic and management outlets, including Administrative Science Quarterly, Academy of Management Journal, Harvard Business Review and California Management Review.

Edmondson received her PhD in organizational behavior, Master of Arts in psychology and Bachelor of Arts in engineering and design from Harvard University. Before her academic career, she was director of research at Pecos River Learning Centers, where she worked on transformational change in large companies, and in the early 1980s, she worked as chief engineer for the legendary architect/inventor Buckminster Fuller.

Dr. Ryan Burge is an associate professor of political science at Eastern Illinois University. He is the author or co-author of four books including The Nones, 20 Myths about Religion and Politics in America, and The Great Dechurching. He has published over thirty articles and book chapters in academic journals concerning religion and politics. His work has been featured in the New York Times, the Washington Post, and the Wall Street Journal. He has appeared in an NBC Documentary, on Full Frontal with Samantha Bee and on 60 Minutes, where Anderson Cooper called him, “one of the leading data analysts of religion and politics in the United States.” He is also the research director for Faith Counts, a non-profit, interfaith organization that promotes the value of religion to the American public. Sylvia Farbstein is on a mission to widen the lens through which people see their world. Her transition from the structured world of private banking to navigating the unknown with her son Brandon, diagnosed with a rare form of dwarfism, reshaped her entire perspective. In a presentation titled “How to Embrace Uncertainty in All Seasons of Life: A Journey of Shattering Barriers to Boundless Opportunities,” she will share how mother and son broke free from societal limitations, leading to a successful entrepreneurial path that has touched millions. With Brandon now a celebrated speaker and Gen Z activist, their story is one of refusing to be confined or defined by adversity. Farbstein will inspire you to view uncertainty with curiosity and harness life’s inevitable twists as catalysts for profound, exciting change.

Farbstein has spent the last two decades learning how life presents us with unexpected twists and turns that can shake us to our core and stop us in our tracks. It is a matter of having a growth mindset, one that she adapted, to utilize the challenges as a catalyst for an exciting change. Her professional world took a leap from the predictable and defined realm of private banking in New York City to one of few answers and no blueprint when her son, now 21, was diagnosed with a rare form of dwarfism at the age of 2. Farbstein and her son’s experiences navigating a world not built for somebody like him prompted them to seek ways to neither be confined nor defined by limitations, perceived or otherwise.

Farbstein helped Brandon launch his professional speaking career when he was 17 years old, advocated for anti-bullying legislation at the Virginia General Assembly, collaborated on Brandon’s two books (Ten Tall and A Kid’s Book About Self Love), and has advised hundreds of families how to leverage curios turn obstacles into opportunities. She proudly works as Brandon’s “Momager” as they spread his universal message to elevate global empathy. Most recently, Farbstein contributed to the new book 100 Diverse Voices on Parenthood with her message of “Combatting Comparison.” She strongly believes in honoring our children for their uniqueness rather than focusing on how they compare to others, including siblings.

Chautauqua School of Music faculty member Almita Vamos, violin, Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra principal cellist Jolyon Pegis, and CSO Fellow Pedro Mendez are joined by pianist Winston Choi for a program whose centerpiece is Beethoven’s resplendent Triple Concerto arranged for piano trio.

A graduate of the Juilliard School, where she studied with Mischa Mischakoff and Louis Persinger, Almita Vamos has won the Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching six times and is currently on the faculty of the Music Institute of Chicago in addition to teaching at Chautauqua. Pedro Mendez, a Venezuelan violinist trained in El Sistema, joins the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra for his second summer as a Fellow in 2024.Jolyon Pegis is a dedicated teacher and chamber musician who also serves as Associate Principal Cellist with the Dallas Symphony. Winston Choi is an accomplished chamber musician who has performed with the Aeolus, Avalon, Philomusica and Spektral string quartets.
