Chautauqua Institution’s 17th Annual Buffalo Day Set for August 25, Featuring Special Programming by IMAGINE Greater Buffalo
Chautauqua Institution announced that its 17th annual Buffalo Day will take place on Tuesday, August 25, welcoming residents of the Buffalo region for a full day of engagement, celebration and community centered experiences. The day will feature special programming by IMAGINE Greater Buffalo.
Buffalo Day is a longstanding tradition that celebrates the deep and enduring relationship between Buffalo and Chautauqua. Now in its 17th year, the event invites Buffalo‑area residents to experience a wide range of cultural, educational and artistic offerings while enjoying a day designed to encourage exploration, connection and participation across the grounds.
In addition to regularly scheduled events, Buffalo Day will feature special programming curated to reflect themes of community, belonging and civic life, offering attendees unique opportunities to gather. For more information on programming, visit buffaloday.chq.org.
Patrons from the Buffalo region zip codes 14201 through 14280 are admitted free to Chautauqua 7 a.m. –11:59 p.m.
Parking is complimentary for Buffalo Day when tickets are reserved ahead of the day, online, by phone, or in person before August 25 at tickets.chq.org. On the day of the event, a credit card will be required for parking lot entry. Guests wishing to pay with cash should proceed to the Main Gate before entering the parking lot.

A worship service led by Fr. Greg Boyle, S.J., founder of Homeboy Industries, invites the community to a powerful reflection on faith expressed through compassion, kinship, and radical belonging. Drawing on decades of ministry in Los Angeles—beginning with his service as pastor of Dolores Mission Church, amid the city’s highest concentration of gang activity, Boyle brings to worship a lived theology rooted in treating every person with dignity and tenderness. His leadership helped give rise to Homeboy Industries, now the world’s largest gang intervention, rehabilitation, and re-entry organization, offering employment, training, and critical support to thousands seeking a new path forward. A widely acclaimed author and nationally recognized voice for mercy and social healing, Fr. Boyle weaves scripture, storytelling, and moral imagination into a service that challenges worshippers to expand the circle of compassion and to see faith as a call to transformative love in the world.

Visionary American pianist and cultural scholar Lara Downes joins acclaimed linguist and public intellectual John McWhorter for a powerful musical conversation exploring the role of American music as a joyful, unifying force — especially in times of hardship, crisis, and national reckoning. Drawing from Downes’ NPR All Things Considered series America in Pursuit, the program traces how songs born of struggle, hope, and resilience have helped generations endure and reconnect, reminding us of the enduring necessity of “harmonizing together.” Presented as part of Chautauqua’s weeklong exploration of The Importance of Gathering, in collaboration with the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, the event invites audiences to consider music not only as art, but as a shared civic language that binds communities across differences.
Naturalization Oath of Allegiance (Citizenship) Ceremony

Chautauqua Institution is honored to host its first naturalization ceremony on its grounds. A naturalization ceremony is a formal and deeply meaningful event in which individuals from around the world take the Oath of Allegiance and are officially welcomed as citizens of the United States. It marks the culmination of a long journey defined by commitment, perseverance and a belief in the ideals of democracy and civic participation. We are proud to serve as the setting where new citizens are recognized, celebrated and where our community can share this historic and joyful milestone.

“Presidential Stories Rooted in Western New York” with Spencer Morgan and Rachelle Moyer Francis

Celebrate Buffalo Day with a special lecture and conversation that brings national history home through two compelling presidential stories deeply connected to Western New York.
This program features a presentation and dialogue with Spencer Morgan, Site Superintendent and Executive Director of the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site, and Rachelle Moyer Francis, Curator for Millard Fillmore Presidential Site and Trustee for Buffalo Presidential Center. Together, they explore how Buffalo became an unlikely but powerful stage for pivotal moments in American presidential history
Morgan’s presentation, “From National Tragedy to American Legend,” examines the moment Theodore Roosevelt assumed the presidency in Buffalo following the assassination of President William McKinley—and how that day transformed Roosevelt into a defining figure in American leadership. Moyer Francis follows with “Buffalo: 2nd Best City for Presidential Stories,” a lively look at the city’s outsized role in shaping presidential narratives, legacy, and memory.

Vocalist Kurt Elling, whom The Guardian dubbed “a kind of Sinatra with superpowers,” joins Downes in a special concert called GET HAPPY, celebrating 250 years of American music as a joyful noise, even in the hardest times.
