“This Is the Best Day of My Life”: Explore Chautauqua Field Trips

Students looking at a piece of art

This June, something magical happened at Chautauqua Institution.

More than 800 students from across Chautauqua County arrived on grounds — not just for a field trip, but for a full-sensory, full-hearted adventure. Through the Explore Chautauqua Field Trips, students from Dunkirk, Fredonia, Jamestown, Bemus Point and Chautauqua Lake stepped into a world where learning comes alive, creativity is celebrated, and every child is invited to see the world — and themselves — a little differently.

Chautauqua in a Day

These experiences included color, texture and imagination at Chautauqua’s Visual Arts Galleries. Under the guidance of Susan and John Turben Director of CVA Galleries Judy Barie and her talented team, students didn’t just observe art — they became artists. Students got a preview of two exhibitions, “Likeness” and “Fields of Color”, then they explored self-expression in a space where every creation was celebrated, making art based on what they saw that day.

Students also became scientists and storytellers. SUNY Fredonia biology professors Dr. Courtney Wigdahl-Perry and Dr. Matthew Lanning led hands-on lessons in observation. But this wasn’t just about microscopes and data — it was about turning what they saw into something new. Students imagined characters inspired by nature, blending science and storytelling in a beautiful example of STEAM education.

In the heart of the Institution, laughter rang out as students joined the Play CHQ team, led by Program Team Operations Coordinator Brandon Sublett. Through games and challenges, they learned the value of teamwork and the joy of play. Meanwhile, in the peaceful Ryan Kiblin Memorial Stormwater Park, volunteers Kriss Miller and Beth Miller guided students on mindfulness walks where students discovered the quiet magic of the natural world.

One teacher later reflected, “The students learned more about how to see things in a different way. Whether that is through a microscope, using one of their five senses, looking at art that used things other than your typical devices, or exploring the grounds. It also helped students practice “real-world” skills such as following a tour guide, listening in a space that isn’t the classroom, working with others, and participating in something outside of your comfort zone.”

Chautauqua Regional Youth Ballet Spring Gala Preview

For many, the highlight was the Chautauqua Regional Youth Ballet’s Spring Gala Preview in the Amphitheater. As dancers brought Camille Saint-Saëns’ “The Carnival of the Animals” to life, students watched in awe. For some, it was their first ballet. For all, it was a moment of wonder — as the Chautauqua Regional Youth Ballet develops some of the most talented dancers in our region. Students were delighted as they watched peers their age express themselves through movement and music.

Young Voices, Big Impact

Students from Jamestown, Clymer, Mayville and Hewes BOCES Educational enjoyed a celebration of budding artistry at the Young Playwrights Project Festival Performance. Ten student-written plays, selected from over 520 submissions, were performed by professional actors. Every student playwright received a certificate, but more importantly, they saw their peers’ words come to life on stage.

A teacher shared, “This was an experience every student enjoyed, regardless of ability or level. The students were proud of their creation and creativity. Furthermore, students are already talking about what they will write for next year’s event!”

A Moment to Remember

At the end of the day, students sprawled on the grass, Director of Arts Education Suzanne Fassett-Wright had a moment to reflect.

“These field trips are crafted to allow students to lead their own discovery experience,” she said. “We want to empower them to experience Chautauqua as any Chautauquan does — through learning, discussion, self-expression, and simply enjoying their surroundings.”

Fassett-Wright recalled a highlight that summed up the impact these experiences can have for students, when a student looked up at her and said something she’ll never forget: “This is the best day of my life.”
