Dear Chautauquans, 

As the 2026 Summer Season drew to a close, the Chautauqua Institution Board of Trustees gathered for its August meeting at an important moment for the Institution. Trustees reflected on a successful season, welcomed new leadership transitions, and focused on the long-term decisions that will shape Chautauqua’s future. 

Throughout the meeting, one theme emerged consistently: stewardship. 

Whether discussing finances, housing, campus planning, governance or philanthropy, trustees focused on the responsibility of sustaining the Chautauqua we value today while preparing it to thrive for generations to come. 

Building a Sustainable Financial Foundation 

One of the board’s most significant actions was approving a set of financial directives that will guide development of Chautauqua’s 2027 operating and capital budgets. These directives establish a framework for ensuring that recurring expenses are supported by recurring earned and contributed revenue, that adequate liquidity is maintained, and that critical investments in capital preservation continue. 

Just as important, the directives acknowledge that resources are not unlimited. If all desired investments cannot be supported, management will be expected to identify priorities and clearly present the trade-offs involved rather than relying on one-time revenue sources or deferred obligations. 

These actions do not constitute the 2027 budget itself. Rather, they represent the board’s commitment to moving beyond short-term financial correction and toward a long-term framework for sustainable financial stewardship. 

Planning Thoughtfully for Chautauqua’s Future 

Trustees also continued discussions regarding housing, campus planning and the future development of Institution property. 

Housing remains a critical issue for Chautauqua because it defines our capacity for overnight guests, figures importantly in patron satisfaction and contributes significantly to our community’s vitality. Trustees discussed opportunities to increase housing capacity while preserving the qualities that make Chautauqua distinctive, including its walkable character, historic setting and shared public spaces. 

The discussion explored a wide range of possibilities, including opportunities to increase density within the existing grounds and questions about how future growth could occur over time. Trustees emphasized that these conversations are part of a broader planning process that will inform future strategic and master planning efforts. 

Prior to making any decisions regarding housing, the Board will be gathering information, examining alternatives and developing the framework through which future decisions can responsibly be made. Trustees repeatedly stressed that decisions involving land use, housing and campus development are consequential and long-lasting, and therefore need to be approached thoughtfully and deliberately. 

Communicating More Clearly About Questions Under Consideration 

The housing discussion led to another important conversation about communication. 

Trustees discussed the importance of communicating early and clearly about major issues, so that community input can be solicited prior to decisions being made. 

Trustees affirmed their commitment to finding better ways to communicate about the Institution’s most important opportunities and challenges as they evolve. 

Welcoming New Trustees and Recognizing Service 

The meeting also marked several important transitions in board leadership. 

The board elected Christopher Nance, Sarah Rosen and Kurt Miller to four-year terms as Class A trustees and re-elected Board Chair Laurie Branch to a second two-year term as chair. Sara Ponkow will continue her service as a Class B trustee. 

Trustees also recognized the contributions of Nancy Gibbs, Richard J. Osborne and Larry D. Thompson, whose terms are concluding. Each was honored for distinguished service to the Institution and reflected on Chautauqua’s enduring mission and future. 

Their leadership, dedication and generosity of thought have shaped important conversations about governance, philanthropy, finances and institutional direction during a consequential period in Chautauqua’s history. 

Leadership and Governance 

The board continued reviewing governance policies and procedures designed to improve effectiveness, strengthen accountability and create more time for substantive discussion of strategic issues. Trustees also reviewed plans supporting the transition to Chautauqua’s new president and the search for the Institution’s next leader in fundraising. 

Community Connection and Belonging 

Trustees recognized the success of this summer’s newcomer initiatives and community-building efforts across the Institution. 

As Chautauqua looks toward the future, welcoming new audiences remains essential. Trustees discussed the importance of helping first-time visitors and participants build connections, understand the community and find meaningful reasons to return. 

A conversation also clarified recent changes to the accommodations function. The Accommodations Office was reorganized, not closed. Assistance continues to be available through Patron Services at the Main Gate Welcome Center and the Visitors Center on Bestor Plaza, including support for visitors seeking accommodations and property owners who rent their homes. 

Looking Ahead 

The coming months will be focused on developing the 2027 budget, initiating work on strategic planning and campus master planning, assuring we reach our goals in philanthropy for 2026, and supporting our new president as he transitions into the role. 

There will be important choices ahead. The board’s responsibility is not to avoid difficult questions, but to ensure those questions are considered thoughtfully, evaluated against Chautauqua’s mission and values, and approached in ways that strengthen the Institution for future generations.
