Each season, Chautauqua comes alive because thousands of people believe in its mission — a mission rooted in lifelong learning, the arts, faith, recreation, civil dialogue and community. Every lecture, performance, worship service, classroom experience, exhibit, conversation and gathering is made possible not only through ticket revenue and program fees, but also through the generosity of donors who choose to invest in Chautauqua’s future. 

Philanthropy is one of the essential ways Chautauquans help sustain the Institution. Each year, donors support Chautauqua through several kinds of gifts. Some gifts are unrestricted, allowing the Institution to direct resources where they are needed most. Others are restricted to a specific program, department or initiative. Some gifts support capital needs, such as preserving and improving buildings, grounds and equipment. Others are directed to the endowment, helping provide long-term financial strength for generations to come. These gifts may arrive in many forms — including outright contributions, multi-year pledges and bequests — but they share a common purpose: ensuring that Chautauqua can continue to deliver its mission with excellence and imagination. 

We are deeply fortunate to have a passionate and loyal donor community. Year after year, Chautauquans step forward because they understand that this place is unlike any other. Their generosity allows us to plan responsibly, serve broadly and create the experiences that make Chautauqua meaningful to so many. 

As the Institution builds its annual budget, philanthropy plays a central role. Each year, we look at giving from the previous year to help estimate what support may be renewed in the year ahead. Those projections help set fundraising goals for the Advancement Department and help determine how much philanthropic support can be counted on to fund programs, departments and institutional priorities. In practical terms, this means that many areas of Chautauqua’s work are built on the expectation that donors who have supported the Institution in the past will continue to do so. 

For example, if a department has a total budget of $400,000 and received $80,000 in philanthropic support the previous year, the Institution may set a goal to raise that same $80,000 again while planning to invest $320,000 in that department. The department still has access to its full budget regardless of how much money is raised for its use, but the amount Chautauqua must invest from other sources depends in part on whether that philanthropic support is renewed. Across the Institution, this creates a system of shared responsibility: Chautauqua commits to providing meaningful programs and services, and donor generosity helps make that commitment possible. 

This is why annual giving matters so much. Philanthropy is not simply an added benefit or a special enhancement. It is built into the way Chautauqua plans, budgets and delivers its mission each year. Your gift helps turn budget assumptions into reality. It helps ensure that programs can continue; departments can serve our community, and the overall Chautauqua experience remains vibrant, accessible and strong. 

This year, Chautauqua’s philanthropic priorities require $7.265 million in annual spendable support. These are funds that can be used in the current fiscal year to help cover the real costs of programs, operations and departments. In other words, this is philanthropy that matters now. It supports the work happening today — the work our community experiences every day during the season and throughout the year. We are currently just over 40% towards this goal; Updates to our annual fund progress will be highlighted on the fundraising thermometer at Bestor Plaza near the Bookstore entrance. 

Some donors understandably feel drawn to support the specific areas of Chautauqua they love most. That generosity is meaningful and deeply appreciated. Gifts restricted to a favorite program, artistic discipline, department or initiative help strengthen important parts of the Institution. At the same time, unrestricted giving through the Chautauqua Annual Fund is especially powerful because it gives the Institution the flexibility to respond to the full range of needs across campus. 

Unrestricted support helps Chautauqua do what restricted gifts cannot always do: address urgent priorities, balance resources across departments, sustain core operations and make thoughtful decisions in real time. It also has a direct impact on affordability. One of the most important purposes of philanthropy at Chautauqua is to help subsidize the cost of the gate pass for everyone. Unrestricted giving is one of the most effective tools we have to help contain the cost of the gate pass, particularly for visitors who may only be able to come for a week but still want to be part of this extraordinary community. 

That is why the Chautauqua Annual Fund is so important. It is the most flexible and immediate way to support the Institution. It strengthens the whole of Chautauqua, not just one part of it. It helps preserve the breadth of our programming, the quality of our facilities, the depth of our community life and the accessibility of the Chautauqua experience.

It is an expression of belief in the mission. It is a vote of confidence in the work being done here.
