Every year, philanthropy makes the Chautauqua experience possible. Like most not-for-profit organizations, Chautauqua Institution relies on annual, spendable contributions to sustain our programs, care for our grounds and facilities, advance strategic priorities and keep Chautauqua accessible to as many people as possible.
Every gift reflects a meaningful connection to Chautauqua, and we are grateful for each donor’s generosity.
Donors sometimes ask how their annual contributions are incorporated into Chautauqua’s budget. Chautauqua develops the annual operating budget before all contributions for the coming year have been received. To prepare that budget responsibly, we study prior-year giving and current giving patterns to develop a reasonable estimate of the philanthropic support we expect in the following year.
Consider a hypothetical Chautauqua program with an approved annual budget of $400,000. The director is authorized to use that amount to deliver the program and the Institution identifies the revenue expected to help cover its cost.
If the program is expected to generate $30,000 in earned revenue, such as ticket sales, and its historical giving patterns suggest that donors will contribute approximately $47,000 in annual support, Chautauqua would plan to provide the remaining $323,000 from other institutional resources:
| Approved program budget | $400,000 |
| Less: anticipated earned revenue | − $30,000 |
| Less: anticipated annual philanthropy | − $47,000 |
| Other institutional support | = $323,000 |
The anticipated $47,000 in philanthropy is already helping to make the $400,000 program budget possible. It is not necessarily an additional $47,000 placed on top of that approved budget. The director has access to the approved $400,000 budget regardless of whether designated annual giving ultimately comes in slightly above or below the amount forecast. The Institution does not ask a director to curtail an already approved program simply because contributions received during the year have not yet reached the projected level.
This approach gives program leaders something essential: certainty. Many departments incur most of their expenses during or even well in advance of the Summer Season, while contributions supporting those programs continue to arrive through the end of the calendar year.
Across a complex organization like Chautauqua, actual fundraising results will naturally vary. One program may receive more designated annual support than anticipated in a particular year, while another may receive less. Our budgeting model allows Chautauqua to honor its approved program commitments, manage fluctuations in annual giving, and direct institutional resources to the areas where they are most needed.
A gift to the unrestricted annual fund gives Chautauqua the flexibility to meet our most important needs. It also helps absorb costs that might otherwise need to be passed along to patrons. Unrestricted philanthropy helps the Institution contain pressure on the price of the gate pass and preserve access for patrons. It also allows the Institution to respond to changing circumstances, support areas facing an unanticipated need and sustain the underlying operations that enable every Chautauqua experience. This makes unrestricted annual giving one of the most powerful expressions of confidence in Chautauqua’s mission.
We recognize that donors can bring exciting opportunities for new performances, expanded programs and other possibilities. This enthusiasm is a powerful testament to the connection people feel to Chautauqua. However, those opportunities require a separate conversation about their full costs and long-term sustainability.
Chautauqua must distinguish between philanthropy that sustains the commitments already included in our budget and philanthropy that expands the budget by adding new programs, activities or ongoing costs. While both forms of generosity are meaningful, they serve different financial purposes.
Our immediate priority is to sustain the annual philanthropic assumptions already incorporated into the Institution’s budget to maintain existing programs, preserve financial stability and ensure that Chautauqua can fulfill the commitments it has already made.
An unrestricted annual gift supports the whole Chautauqua experience, including the programs and people you see, the essential work behind the scenes and the shared financial foundation that allows this remarkable place to thrive. We invite you to help sustain what we have collectively built at Chautauqua by supporting the annual fund.
With gratitude for all who support Chautauqua,
Amit Taneja
