About Luis

Luis Cerna is a curiosity-driven, seasoned professional in data analytics with a strong passion for research, leveraging a foundation in scientific thinking. Currently, Luis is part of an interdisciplinary team, deeply invested in uncovering hidden connections and distilling complex information into actionable strategies. He supports Chautauqua Institution’s mission as the business intelligence analyst & Project 360 data lead.

Discovery in science does not follow a straightforward path, nor does Luis’ journey. For him it all began when receiving his bachelor’s of science degree in physics engineering, where he developed a profound passion for science and research. Working on basic science projects under the leadership of well-regarded physicists, he gained a deep appreciation for the impact that interdisciplinary teams can achieve. 

Luis enjoyed and learned from every step of the process: from formulating hypotheses to the meticulous collection and thorough cleaning of data, to the excitement of exploration and data mining, the art of modeling, the crucial process of interpreting and drawing conclusions, and the vital step of conveying and sharing information. He came to understand how basic science lays the foundation for applied science — in the same way, data and information drive applied analytics and strategic decision-making. 

He complemented this foundation by delving into more rigorous work in the software industry and by coordinating business intelligence functions in the public transportation industry. Here he really got a grasp of the impact one can directly influence in peoples lives. Now, pushing data to its limits and being part of the groups that directly witness how information can influence, and benefit society has become one of his main drivers. 

Why did you choose to work at Chautauqua? What do you like about working at Chautauqua?

I chose to work at Chautauqua because it’s a unique place where intellectuals and diverse perspectives converge. Here, individuals of all ages come together to explore and expand their values, enriching themselves through meaningful interactions. Chautauqua offers an ideal environment to make a genuine impact. Its vast scope, impactful projects, vibrant culture, and the passionate individuals who contribute to its mission make it a place worth committing oneself to. Inspiration thrives at Chautauqua Institution, and I am dedicated to fostering personal growth and collective enrichment. I am excited to contribute to its legacy by taking philanthropic responsibility on how I utilize my resources and time.

Personal Interests

I find transcendence exploring life’s simple pleasures and engaging in activities that nourish both body and mind. From the rich body in a morning cup of espresso, challenging my own body to its limits hiking trails or working out, the tranquility of a campfire under the stars, the rush of diving into cool waters, the images in the mind awaiting on the pages of a good book, and the endless adventures in the mind when just sitting and feeling the universe’s vastness, indifferent to our existence. I also hold very dear and great value for people’s time, taking deep appreciation for the moments I get to spend with the people I love.
