Sigma Alpha Iota Competition
The Sigma Alpha Iota Philanthropies, Inc. Competition rotates annually among the three departments, in 2022 the competition will be held within the Instrumental Program. Winner receives $1,000 and performs as soloist with the Music School Festival Orchestra in the summer of 2023.
Sigma Alpha Iota Philanthropies Instrumental Guidelines 2022:
Instrumental students will be emailed a SAI application on May 1, 2022 and instructions on how to upload them to our drive. Students wishing to enter the competition should upload their applications no later 5 p.m. on June 1.
Preliminary Round:
Friday, July 1 (Week 1)
4–6 p.m. in Fletcher Music Hall
Unaccompanied and private
10 minutes total of chosen selection
Semifinals Round:
Saturday, July 9 (Week 2)
6:30–9:30 p.m. in Fletcher Music Hall
8 students, accompanied and open to the public
10 minutes total of chosen selection
Finals Round:
Thursday, July 14 (Week 3)
4–7 p.m. in Fletcher Music Hall
5 students, accompanied and open to the public
Entire piece
Note: Accompanists will only be involved in the semi and final rounds. In the preliminary and semi rounds students will only need to perform up to a maximum of 10 minutes duration from sections selected at the student’s discretion. It is anticipated, but not mandatory, that most candidates will perform from memory. In the final round, students will be expected to know and perform the entire work.

Judges will be selected from faculty members of the Chautauqua School of Music and the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra.
The preliminary string round will be judged by a mix of CHQ faculty and CSO members.
The semi-final round will be judged by a mix of CHQ faculty and CSO members.
The final round will judged by the Artistic/Music Director, a member of the string faculty and a member of the wind faculty. A teacher with a student performing in the final round would not be selected to be a final competition judge.
