Schools Rules and Regulations

Because of the short, intense nature of Chautauqua Institution’s summer training in the arts, students who cannot function within our simple, common-sense rules or who are keeping other students from the safe and complete enjoyment of their summer study and are in violation of any rules or regulations could result in disciplinary action up to and including dismissal from the program without refunds. In the event that a student has left the program by reason of a violation of Institution policies, the Institution reserves the right to refuse re-entry into the program in any subsequent year.

Specific Prohibitions

The following specific prohibitions apply to all of Chautauqua’s Summer School students:

  • Electrical heaters, hot plates, and other electrical cooking appliances: They are a fire hazard. These and any open-flamed object, such as a candle, are prohibited in institution facilities.
  • Smoking and vaping are prohibited everywhere in institution buildings. New York State has adopted laws restricting smoking in public places. Smoking areas will be posted.
  • Pets: are prohibited in residence halls owned by the institution, and from public buildings.
  • Alcohol: The possession or consumption of alcoholic beverages is prohibited in Institution buildings (including residence halls) and in public on Institution grounds. The provision (providing) of alcohol to a minor will result in immediate dismissal from the program. The student must vacate the grounds within 24 hours, and their gate pass will be taken. According to NYS law, the student can also be charged and arrested. Underage students who are caught drinking may also be charged under NYS law.
  • Drugs: The use, possession, or distribution of controlled substances is prohibited, and violators will be reported to law enforcement authorities if engaging in illegal activity. While personal use of cannabis is legal in New York for some individuals, Chautauqua Institution Rules & Regulations prohibit cannabis in Institution facilities.

Under 21

First Offense – Student may be removed from the program, asked to vacate the grounds within 24 hours and gate pass will be taken.

21 and up

First Offense – meet with dept head, private instructor, residence hall staff, etc. May be removed depending on offense

Second Offense – Student may be removed from the program, asked to vacate the grounds within 24 hours and gate pass will be taken.

  • Bullying: Please refer to our statement sent separately and available on our website.
  • Drugs: The use, possession or distribution of controlled substances is prohibited, and violators will be reported to the law enforcement authorities and dismissed from the program.
  • Firearms: Possession of a firearm is not permitted on the grounds.
  • Fire Alarms: New York State law requires immediate evacuation of buildings during fire alarms. Students may not re-enter until given permission by dorm staff.
  • Only bags sized 4.5” x 6.5” are allowed in the Amphitheater unless completely clear.

Practice Rooms in Greene Family Commons

Are available between 8 a.m. and 11 p.m. on a first come first served basis. Practicing of any kind (even marking, buzzing, vocalizing etc.) in dorm rooms is not permitted.

Overnight Visitation

No other student, family member, or other guest may spend the night in a student’s residence hall room. No exceptions. $100 Security Deposit may be kept if violated, and student risks having their housing revoked.

Rules for Students 18 and Older

  • Quiet hours are observed throughout the grounds beginning at 11 p.m. until 8 a.m.
  • Students are requested to provide their RA with information as to where they may be reached in case of emergency. If leaving the grounds, it is advisable to inform the RA on duty.

Rules for Students under 18

  • Students under 18 are not permitted in rooms with any student over the age of 18.
  • Students under 18 living in the residence hall need prior parental permission to leave the grounds, ride in cars with other drivers, and to be away overnight with a parent/guardian. This permission must be communicated by the parent via phone with the RA on duty.
  • CURFEW is assigned by age, not by room assignment, and is applied to all students ages 17 and younger and to all dancers.
    • School of Dance Workshop and Festival students have a curfew of 10PM, seven days a week with lights out at 10:30PM
    • All other students under 18 have a curfew of 11PM, seven days a week with lights out at 11:30PM
    • The School of Dance curfews are put into place by the Dance faculty. These are congruent with published Institution guidelines. They may be edited based on certain dance performances.
  • Students under 18 may not ride any motor vehicle/cycle/scooter or watercraft powered by a motor except when a parent has contacted the Director.

**These curfews are enforced for the safety of all students staying in Chautauqua’s Residence Halls
