Trip Expert: Kwame Alexander

Our trip expert is #1 New York Times Bestselling Author Kwame Alexander, Distinguished Fellow, African American Heritage House at Chautauqua. A poet, educator, publisher, and Emmy-winning producer, Alexander is the author of 50 books, including This is the Honey: An Anthology of Contemporary Black Poets, Why Fathers Cry at Night: A Memoir; The Caldecott Medal and Newbery Honor-winning picture book The Undefeated, illustrated by Kadir Nelson; Becoming Muhammad Ali, co-authored with James Patterson; and the Newbery Medal-winning middle grade novel, The Crossover, now a television series on Disney+, and most recently, The Mighty Macy series. His books have long been a staple on lists for both Chautauqua Institution’s Young Readers program and its Battle of the Books. Alexander, the former Michael I. Rudell Artistic Director of Literary Arts at Chautauqua, and Innovator-in-Residence at the American School in London, made his Chautauqua Lecture Series debut in a week dedicated to “The Life of Literature” in August 2023.

Arrival: Welcome to Ghana 

Arrive in Accra, where the city’s vibrant energy meets you the moment you step off the plane. Transfer to the elegant Mövenpick Ambassador Hotel, your oasis in the heart of the city. In the evening, gather for a specially curated Afro‑fusion dinner highlighting the richness of Ghanaian flavors reimagined with contemporary flair. Expect bold spices, fresh local ingredients, and a vibrant atmosphere that sets the tone for your journey.

Day 2

Accra’s Heritage: Visionaries and Freedom

Begin the morning at the W.E.B. Du Bois Centre, honoring the scholar whose legacy continues to shape global conversations on civil rights and Pan–Africanism. Continue to Independence Square and Black Star Gate, iconic spaces that celebrate Ghana’s role as the first sub‑Saharan African nation to gain independence. At the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, explore the story of Ghana’s founding leader through evocative architecture and exhibits. Lunch is a memorable culinary experience at Midunu House with Chef Selassie Atadika, where “New African Cuisine” combines heritage ingredients with innovative storytelling. The evening is yours—relax at the hotel or sample Accra’s lively nightlife.

Day 3

Community Connections and a Local Legacy

Travel to Konko Village for a traditional welcome ceremony. Engage with students, teachers, and community members for a look at rural Ghanaian life. Continue to the Barbara E. Alexander Memorial Library, founded by Kwame in 2018 as part of LEAP for Ghana — a cultural literacy initiative expanding access to books, learning, and healthcare. Afterward, enjoy a leisurely lunch at a serene local resort. Return to Accra in the late afternoon with the rest of your evening free to unwind or explore at your own pace.

Day 4

Legacy of the Ashanti Kingdom

Travel north on a short flight to Kumasi, capital of the storied Ashanti Kingdom. Visit the Manhyiah Palace Museum, where you’ll encounter rare works of art and regalia, including recently repatriated pieces once taken during the colonial era. Continue to the Ghana National Cultural Centre, an enriching space that highlights Ghana’s many ethnic traditions through crafts, exhibits, and performances viewed outside a colonial lens. Before your return flight to Accra, participate in a Kente weaving workshop — an unforgettable opportunity to engage with the artistry behind Ghana’s most iconic textile in the region it originated.

Writers and Artisans

Immerse yourself in Ghana’s vibrant literary community during a workshop with local writers whose perspectives illuminate contemporary life and storytelling. Rhythm and Celebration

Return to Accra this morning and continue to the Accra Arts Centre. Check back into your Accra hotel to refresh, then gather for a festive farewell dinner at Buka Restaurant — beloved for its elevated traditional dishes.
