Overview

Join Chautauqua Travels for a poignant eight-day journey through Berlin and Nuremberg offering an in-depth exploration of history, justice, and contemporary Jewish life in Germany. With exclusive access to significant historical sites and expert-led discussions with your trip expert, Kristan McMahon, President of the Robert H. Jackson Center, travelers will gain insights into the impact of Nazi rule, the resilience of Jewish communities, and the enduring legacy of the Nuremberg Trials, which held Nazi leaders accountable for war crimes. Visit the Jewish Museum, the Silent Heroes Memorial, and the House of the Wannsee Conference, where the “Final Solution” was devised. In Nuremberg, stay at the very hotel where Robert H. Trip Expert: Kristan McMahon  

Kristan McMahon has served as President of the Robert H. Jackson Center since April 2019. McMahon is a former principal with Vetted Solutions, an executive search firm specializing in association and nonprofit recruiting and consulting in Washington D.C. where she helped guide a transformational process for the company’s executive searches. Previously, McMahon was corporate counsel for Verizon in Arlington, VA where she advised all business entities on a variety of antitrust issues, including deal analysis and compliance with antitrust/competition laws. Before joining Verizon, McMahon served as a Staff Attorney for Howrey LLP, where she was part of the antitrust team leading government investigations and litigations for numerous global Fortune 500 companies. 

McMahon received a B.A. in Journalism/Mass Communication and Political Science at Saint Bonaventure University, a J.D. from The Catholic University of America, Columbus School of Law, and a Certificate from the Communications Law Institute of the Columbus School of Law for her special studies in Communications Law.

Day 1

Arrival Berlin 

Arrive in Berlin and transfer independently to your centrally located hotel. Gather at the hotel this evening for a welcome dinner and reception with Kristan McMahon, President of the Robert H. Jackson Center, and fellow travelers.

Day 2

Jewish History and Resistance 

Your day begins with a lecture from Kristan McMahon about the Nuremberg laws and how they reshaped life for many of Germany’s citizens. Then discover exhibits on Jewish life, culture, and resilience throughout history on a guided visit of the Jewish Museum. Embark on a coach tour of World War II sites throughout the city, with stops by the Reichstag, former Nazi Ministries, and the WWII memorials. Explore Berlin’s culinary scene on your own for lunch. After lunch, learn about the courageous individuals who resisted Nazi persecution and helped save Jewish lives with a visit to the Silent Heroes Memorial Center. Visit the House of the Wannsee Conference where the “Final Solution” was planned. Then, visit Villa Liebermann, a lakeside villa and memorial to Jewish culture before World War II. End a full day of exploration with a lively meal in a historic venue with classic German charm.

Day 3

Tracing Berlin’s Shadows 

This morning, Kristan McMahon will share insights into Nazi history — including the rapid and dramatic change in German society — setting the stage for your visit to the Topography of Terror. Take a guided tour of the Topography of Terror, built on the site of the SS Reich Security Main Office. Here, you will learn about the Nazi regime’s rise to power and its brutal impact on Germany. Then, savor creative Middle Eastern cuisine in a vibrant setting. After lunch, join a representative from a local synagogue for a walking tour to examine Jewish life in today’s Germany. The day concludes with a visit to the Sachsenhausen Memorial and Museum, a former concentration camp where you will reflect on the atrocities committed during the Holocaust and honor the memory of its victims. This evening is yours to explore Berlin and reflect on the day’s visits.

Day 4

Journey to Nuremberg 

Travel approximately five hours south to Nuremberg today, stopping en route in Bamberg, a UNESCO-listed medieval town noted for its well-preserved architecture, charming cobblestone streets, and distinctive local beer. Enjoy lunch at leisure and take time to explore Bamberg’s historic allure before continuing to Nuremburg and settling into Le Meridien Grand Hotel, where Robert Jackson and his colleagues gathered throughout the Nuremberg trials. Join your local guide for a walking tour of Nuremberg where you will discover the city’s historic streets and its connection to the Nuremberg Trials. Continue to explore Nuremberg on your own this evening.

Day 5

Rothenburg’s Timeless Charm 

Enjoy a morning at a renowned wine cooperative in the heart of Franconian wine country. Discover the history and tradition of this unique winemaking collective and gain insights into Franconian viticulture as you sample a variety of their exceptional regional wines. Conclude your visit with lunch on-site, featuring local flavors paired perfectly with the wines. Continue to Rothenburg, a picturesque fairy-tale town celebrated for its preserved medieval architecture. Wander through its cobblestone streets, surrounded by half-timbered houses and fortified walls, and explore landmarks like the Town Hall Tower, offering panoramic views. Return to Nuremberg this evening with time for dinner on your own.

Day 6

Nuremberg’s Legacy 

Gain insights on Nuremberg’s historical significance with a lecture from Kristan McMahon this morning. After, explore the Nazi rally sites and nearby exhibition about the rise and fall of the Third Reich. Savor Bavarian specialties over lunch at a local restaurant. Then, take a walking tour of the area around the Street of Human Rights, visiting monuments commemorating victims of persecution, and fostering reflection on justice and peace. Discover the Kunstbunker, the underground site where art was hidden during WWII.

Day 7

Nuremberg Trials Anniversary 

Commemorate the 80th Anniversary of the conclusion of the Nuremberg Trials with a full day at the site of this historic event. Your day begins with a tour of Room 600 at the Palace of Justice and Trials Museum, where you will learn about the historic trials that shaped international law and set important precedents for justice. After, engage in a stimulating seminar with leaders from the International Nuremberg Principals Academy about the role of the International Criminal Court in upholding human rights and prosecuting war crimes and its influence on international justice today. Refresh at your hotel, then gather for a final farewell dinner with a celebratory meal in a historic riverside setting.

Day 8

Departure  

Take a group transfer to Munich for individual flights back to the United States.
