Trip Expert: Kwame Alexander  

Our trip expert is #1 New York Times Bestselling Author Kwame Alexander, Michael I. Rudell Artistic Director of Literary Arts and Inaugural Writer-in-residence at Chautauqua. A poet, educator, publisher, and Emmy-nominated producer, Alexander is the author of 40 books, including Why Fathers Cry at Night: A Memoir; The Caldecott Medal and Newbery Honor-winning picture book The Undefeated, illustrated by Kadir Nelson; Becoming Muhammad Ali, co-authored with James Patterson; and the Newbery Medal-winning middle grade novel, The Crossover, now a television series on Disney+. His books have long been a staple on lists for both Chautauqua Institution’s Young Readers program and its Battle of the Books. Alexander, the former Innovator-in-Residence at the American School in London, made his Chautauqua Lecture Series debut in a week dedicated to “The Life of Literature” in August 2023.

Day 1

Arrival: Welcome to Ghana 

Arrive on flights from your home city into Accra’s Kotoka International Airport. Check in at the Mövenpick Ambassador Hotel. In the evening, savor a specially curated Afro-fusion dinner, where the flavors of Ghanaian cuisine blend with contemporary flair. Let the vibrant atmosphere prepare you for the exciting days ahead.

Day 2

Literary Ghana

Start the day with a visit to the W.E.B. Du Bois Centre, a tribute to the life and legacy of the renowned scholar and civil rights activist. Then, connect with Ghanaian literary voices, where a workshop with local writers will spark engaging discussions. Then indulge in brunch featuring flavors from around the world and live music. The evening is yours to relax or perhaps check out Accra’s nightlife with live music at Afrikiko Leisure Centre.

Day 3

Ghanaian Heritage 

Immerse yourself in the heart of Accra’s history with a visit to the Black Star Gate & Independence Square, monumental symbols of Ghana’s hard-earned freedom. Then, continue the journey at the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, where the visionary leader’s influence on Ghana and Africa comes to life. The Accra Arts Centre offers a cultural immersion with a welcoming drumming session followed by a hands-on drumming class, connecting you to Ghanaian rhythms. A late lunch at a local restaurant showcases a fusion of modern traditional African cuisine. The rest of the day is yours to enjoy the hotel, stroll the Makola market, or explore Accra’s food scene.

Day 4

Cultural Past and Educational Future

This morning, venture to Ashesi University College, a prestigious institution known for its focus on developing ethical leaders through innovative education in business, computer science, and engineering. Then, visit Berekuso for a Kente weaving tour and class, where you’ll learn about the intricate artistry of this iconic Ghanaian craft. Enjoy a late lunch at the Peduase Valley Resort, a tranquil retreat surrounded by nature.

Day 5

A Local Legacy

Begin your day with a trip to Konko Village for a traditional welcome ceremony, offering a unique glimpse into village life and a chance to interact with students and teachers. Continue to the Barbara E. Alexander Memorial Library. Opened in 2018 by Kwame, this library and health clinic were established as part of LEAP for Ghana, a cultural literacy program he co-founded.  Enjoy a delightful meal at a Koforidua dining institution. Then travel southwest approximately 4 hours to Cape Coast, taking you through mountainous terrain, lush greenery, and coastline to check in this evening to the Lemon Beach Resort in Elmina.

Day 6

The Natural Beauty of Kakum

Spend the morning at Kakum National Park, a lush tropical rainforest renowned for its rich biodiversity and stunning canopy walkway. The park is home to diverse wildlife, including forest elephants, monkeys, and various bird species, offering visitors a unique opportunity to explore one of West Africa’s most important natural reserves. Return to your hotel in Elmina for a relaxing afternoon including dinner with live music at the resort.

Day 7

Cape Coast Castle

This morning takes you to Cape Coast Castle, a historic fort that played a central role in the transatlantic slave trade. Built by the British in the 17th century, it now serves as a museum and a poignant reminder of the horrors of slavery. Lunch at a beachside resort where you can soak in the ocean views and enjoy fresh local dishes. Then, return to Accra (approximately 3 hours) and check back into Mövenpick Hotel. After some time to freshen up, gather for a farewell reception to toast your Ghanaian journey.

Day 8

Farewell Ghana

Depart Accra based on individual flight times. For travelers with evening flights, spend the day relaxing at your hotel, or you may choose to venture to Osu Oxford Street for some last-minute shopping before you depart.
