Young Playwrights Project

Chautauqua Institution Arts Education and the Chautauqua Theater Company are proud to present this interactive, three-part playwriting experience for students in grades 3 and 4. This program combines the best of in-person and remote educational experiences to empower students to share their unique stories, while developing their writing skills and learning about the theater arts.

The Young Playwrights Project is based on Florida Studio Theatre’s “Write-a-Play” program. The project is presented in three phases. Phase 1 teaches students how to write a play, focusing on empowering the student imagination, learning the elements of a play and using those elements to write plays that help students develop problem-solving skills. Phase 2 allows students to hear their plays read and acted out by an inter-generational volunteer team of play readers. During Phase 3, students see a selection of plays, chosen from all student plays written that year, performed by the Chautauqua Theater Company.
