Tennis has a long and rich tradition at Chautauqua. Originally introduced by co-founder Bishop John Vincent in 1878, the first lawn tennis court was set up along Chautauqua’s lakefront.
The Chautauqua Tennis Center is located directly behind the Turner Community Center on Route 394 and boasts eight state-of-the-art, fast-dry courts. Using the patented “Hydro-Grid” system, a sub-surface irrigation system keeps the clay-like playing surface uniformly moist. The result is a court that is consistent, gives a true bounce, is gentle on the feet and legs of players, and also drains exceptionally well, allowing for a quick return to play even after heavy rain. Two of the courts are illuminated for night play.

Pickleball
The Pickleball courts located at the Chautauqua Tennis Center next to the Turner Community Center are open until late September.
Open (Pick-Up) Pickleball: During Chautauqua’s summer assembly season, open (pick-up) pickleball is Monday through Friday from 8–10:30 a.m. and 5–7:30 p.m.; Saturday & Sunday 8–10:30 a.m. only. Please note that weekday morning sessions are often very popular, and at times, attendance can be high enough that some players choose not to participate due to wait times.
Quiet times: While the courts open as early as 7 a.m., Monday–Friday 7–8 a.m. and Saturday & Sunday 7–9 a.m. are quiet times when players must use specially designed paddles and balls that are made specifically for quiet play.
For more information regarding pickleball and tennis, please contact the Chautauqua Tennis Center at (716) 357-6276 or via email at tennis@chq.org.
