Miller Cottage Tours: Join Clara Miller for a 30-minute tour of the first floor of the historic Miller-Edison Cottage. The cottage was built in 1875 for the co-founder and first president of the Institution, Lewis Miller, an inventor and businessman from Akron, Ohio. President Ulysses S. Grant visited the property that year. Miller’s daughter, Mina, also spent summers at the cottage with her husband, Thomas Alva Edison. The Swiss-style structure on lakefront Miller Park is an excellent example of “stick style” architecture popular in the late 1800s. Considered one of the earliest prefabricated structures in America with components produced and assembled in Akron, the cottage has gone through numerous renovations, expansions and systems upgrades over the past 130 years.

The Lewis Miller Cottage was designated a National Historic Landmark on July 4, 1966.

About Your Guide:
Clara Miller is a cultural landscape historian and lifelong Chautauquan. She graduated in 2020 from the Savannah College of Art and Design with a bachelor’s degree in Architectural History. Clara moved to Scotland in 2021 to complete a master’s program in Gender History at the University of Glasgow. While pursuing her degree, Clara worked for the National Trust for Scotland, designing and giving tours in historic house museums.

Clara’s interest in the intersections of history, landscape, and gendered experience is linked to her early exposure to Chautauqua’s richly historical community and grounds. Her master’s research centered on the intertwined history of hegemonic femininity and landscape gardens.
