As part of the Oliver Archives Center’s 2024 Heritage Lecture Series celebrating Chautauqua’s history and its 150th anniversary, Timothy Binkley will present “John H. Vincent: The Pillar and Pillars of Chautauqua”. In this presentation, Binkley will share the surprising story of how Chautauqua co-founder and Chancellor Vincent received the title “Pillar of the Chautauqua educational movement.” Binkley will then explore the relationship between Rev. Vincent’s life experiences and Chautauqua’s four pillars. To conclude, he will name two other historical pillars of Chautauqua that make the picture more complete.

Tim Binkley is a public historian, member of the Academy of Certified Archivists, and minister in the Church of the Brethren. He is a graduate of Defiance College (Defiance, Ohio), Bethany Theological Seminary (Richmond, Indiana), and Wright State University (Dayton, Ohio). His career includes leadership positions at The Henry Ford Museum (Dearborn, Michigan), Onekama Church of the Brethren (Onekama, Michigan), United Theological Seminary (Dayton, Ohio), and Perkins School of Theology (Dallas, Texas). In 2020 Binkley joined the faculty of Berea College in Berea, Kentucky, as Head of Special Collections and Archives and Assistant Professor of Library Science.

As part of the Oliver Archives Center’s 2024 Heritage Lecture Series celebrating Chautauqua’s history and its 150th anniversary, Gary Moore will present “Go Ye into all the World: Stories of the Chautauqua Movement and its Legacy.”

Gary Moore is a professor emeritus at North Carolina State University where he was a member of the Academy of Outstanding Teachers and received numerous professional awards for outstanding teaching. During his academic career he served as president of four different national professional organizations. He has authored three books and published more than 150 journal articles.

An in-demand speaker, Moore has given presentations in 41 states, three Canadian provinces, and on four continents. He has spoken in the Heritage Lecture series on 12 previous occasions. He has also made presentations at the Lakeside Chautauqua in Ohio and the Fountain Park Chautauqua in Indiana.

He publishes a weekly blog, “The Friday Footnote,” that focuses on life in rural America.
